Thanks
to all of the members, and particularly Dave
Kaplan, who have put in so much time and effort in pouring
and finishing the cannons to be used in the trail. Each
cannon takes several hours of hard work in the heat and sun
. We are very lucky to have so many dedicated members
who have volunteered their time on this project. Thanks also to CSR
Rinker who has donated the concrete for the cannons.
THE FORT LAUDERDALE
A group headed by former mayor, Robert O. Cox has made a proposal to the City of Ft. Lauderdale to convert the old Post Office Building on Southwest Second Street into a Maritime Museum. The purpose of the museum would be to record, preserve and exhibit the marine heritage of Fort Lauderdale, to identify and define its significance to the City’s development and to it’s future as represented, by its pleasure, commercial and military maritime history. To provide educational facilities for children and adults in marine related fields, to complement the existing programs offered by the Discovery Center and the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society, and to enhance, complement and facilitate Ft. Lauderdale’s Riverwalk Program. Mr. Cox has indicated an interest in making space available in the museum to MAC for the display of some of our artifacts. MAC member Richard Kato spoke in support |
of the project
at a recent city council meeting and the
mayor and city council seemed quite
interested in the coin he presented as an example of some of
the artifacts we could make available for display.
Ray McAlister also attended. We’ll keep you informed of the
progress of this project.
PALM BEACH PROPOSES
Looks like MAC members could be putting their efforts into another snorkel trail in the near future. Major renovations are being made to Peanut Island which will include a lagoon, parking for boats, and other recreational facilities. MAC has been approached to help with the construction of a snorkel trail in the lagoon area.
