Aria Data Base for Figaro |
Scorsi gla molti paesi |
? |
1948*- Tito Gobbi, whos fame as an actor had preceded him, was not quite the subtle artish he later became, and his figaro was on the rough side. But in retrospect some of the reviews betray a certain bite. Fried wrote: "Despite his brash, uninhibited manner of singing, the audience like him immediately." |

Tito Gobbi |
1968 - Wixell was a very lively Figaro, even playing his own guitar. |
1972*(spot) Young Alan Titus' Figaro (he juggled oranges, executed a Spanish dance and performed a haircut during the "Largo al Factotum") brought a remarkable combination of dash, grace and sex appeal. another bit of news: Fiorello's "employer be damned" recitative at the end of the first scene was included, as it almost never is in Barber performances. |

2006-2007 |
2006 - Here in San Francisco as Figaro, he was kept so maddeningly busy during the bravura aria "Largo al Factotum" that you could hardly appreciate that he was singing one of the most iconic arias in all of opera. He was obliged to do everything short of cooking an eight-course meal./ Review |
As Figaro, baritone Nathan Gunn gave a smooth, alluring performance -- a little bland, perhaps, but tonally robust and fully in command. His opening "Largo al factotum" -- the occasion for one of the production's funniest sight gags -- was a bravura display of full-voiced patter./ Review 2003
Baritone Nathan Gunn is an amiable, smooth-toned Figaro, nimble both vocally and physically, and he boasts an even-keeled demeanor that fits nicely into the ensembles. But you would never suspect that this is the opera's title character, let alone the one stage-managing its various high jinks./ Review 2006 |

2006-SFArtWorld Note (from the balcony): Figaro , Nathan Gunn, juggled (something round), executed a Spanish dance and performed a shave, also with dash, grace and sex appeal -- NOW A SFO TRADITION. Johannes Schaaf's 2006 nod to Richard Pearlman's 1972 (spot). |
