1999-2000-Gregory Turay
1999-2000-Meanwhile, tenor Gregory Turay was far from disgraceful as Don Ottavio, a famously thankless part that requires a crack lyric tenor to hang around all evening in order to sing two of the most difficult arias ever written. "Electronically enhanced" in his final appearance as the petrified Commendatore, Reinhard Hagen helped bring the opera to a memorable conclusion./ Review
A more alarming failure was the debut of Gregory Turay as Donna Anna's beloved Don Ottavio. This young American tenor recently won the prestigious Richard Tucker Award, but surely not on the basis of the sort of strained, shapeless singing he displayed Saturday. The phrases were garbled, the high notes clouded and imprecise; I prefer to believe that he was coming down with a cold./

Charles Castronovo
Charles Castronovo's Don Ottavio was lyrical but small-toned./ Review
Charles Castronovo, heard here most recently in The Pearl Fishers, seems a changed singer in the last two years — and all for the better. His voice is smallish, though dark, vibrant, and perfectly placed. He didn't have the breath control for an ideal account of "Il mio tesoro" (Console my treasure), but time stood still during a breathtaking "Dalla sua pace" (On her peace of mind). / SFCV
