Director Tambosi does his utmost to patch over this problematic dramatic structure and to keep the opera moving within Frank Philipp Schloessmann's period-perfect sets and rich costumes.
Indeed, the designer faithfully executes Puccini's elaborate scenic directions down to the last detail, from the bustling French town square that opens the opera, to Manon's sumptuous lapis lazuli boudoir, to the teeming harbor of Le Havre, to the barren rocks of the Louisiana plain where she meets her demise. One of Schloessmann's many realistic touches, just in time for Halloween, is a scary hot poker that's used to brand fallen women before their deportation to America. / Review |

The production had big, luxurious sets for the first three acts and a curious rocky landscape in Act 4 for the desolate wasteland outside New Orleans (geography was not a strength of Puccini). Director Olivier Tambosi kept the movement fresh and natural.
