Hockney's conception of the opera is very much grounded in visual art. His sets are vivid and colorful, decorated with detailed Celtic designs.
Within this setting, the figures on stage move from pose to pose. Each time they shift, they settle into an artistic composition framed by the proscenium. These staged paintings prove to be powerful evocations of the sensual fantasy world in which Wagner set his tale of ill-fated love.
Past Review

In Act II, night cast a silvery long-shadowed spell. Orange and old gold made of this Isolde and her attendant a spectacular pair as they paced the flagstones until the night hunt had withdrawn to what they had hoped was a safe distance. In the heavy-boughed trees, Celtic ornament ran riot as moonlight turned forms white to blue and coaxed a whole new range of color from the castle./ Review
Excepting the 2001 "Meistersinger", the sparse fare of Wagnerian opera presented in San Francisco in the 21st century, consisting of the
2000 (ENO) Lehnhoff "Parsifal", the 2004 "Dutchman" thing, and this "Tristan", give no hint to a newcomer to Wagnerian Opera in San Francisco as to Wagner's intentions in stagecraft.  One becomes nostalgic for the
1999 "Ring", the last time Wagner's myth-based operas were presented in S.F. productions in the Wagnerian ballpark.  The good news is that the off-base ideas are all the intellectual and physical property of other opera companies.

SFO PERFORMANCE BY DAY-DATE-SERIES
The San Francisco Opera has changed productions for next season's offering of "Tristan und Isolde." The Opera was planning to use a Francesca Zambello production, but the company's production director, Drew Landmesser, was concerned that the physical size of the production would pose problems for the company. Instead, the Opera will use the David Hockney production created for the Los Angeles Opera in 1987/ Source Review

PRE-OPERA TALK
Prompter - Jonathan Khuner
Donald Runnicles shook the hand of the prompter, still in the box, at  opening night./ Maybe this signals that SFO will find it in their budger to keep them on.
