As Scarpia, Mark Delavan was everything one could hope for. With the assured exuberance that comes from absolute power, his Scarpia embraced his lusts with gusto. Delavan's baritone is clear and strong, his portrayal sneering and ominous but disarmingly human. Although no one should root for Tosca's would-be rapist, his presence kept the stage alive — and his death signaled the coming of a long Act III without his electrifying evil to enjoy./ Review

On August 11, 2004 Santa Fe Opera presented Giuseppe Verdi's Simon Boccanegra, with an excellent cast. Mark Delavan seemed to have no difficulty whatsoever with the long and difficult title role which he sang poignantly with well focused, resounding tones. He has a charismatic stage presence and he gave a very human portrayal of the conflicted character./ Review
