July 3, 2005 The Santa Fe Opera waited almost 50 years to mount Puccini's final opera, Turandot -- a warhorse of a work full of color and pageantry, and a heart-breaking love story. Puccini died before he could finish the work, whose story comes from myth and fable./ Review |
Still, an effective cast can carry the production, and the singers here largely did so. James Morris's nuanced portrayal of the Dutchman (not to mention his deftness on the treacherous towering gangplank) gave evidence of his considerable experience in the role, perhaps to a fault. In the first act, Mr. Morris seemed so intent on shaping each individual note, swelling and pulling off sharply, that the projection of text and musical line sometimes suffered. Here and to a lesser extent in the later acts, he also showed a tendency to hit entries flat or sag in pitch./ Review |
