Hayate no Gotoku: Episode List
(01-05)

01 "Unmei in English is Destiny"
"Unmei wa, Eigo de iu to Desutinī" (運命は、英語で言うとデスティニー)

A meeting with Santa when he is young, Santa tell Hayate to work hard to achieve something. He took it seriously. The sixteen-year old boy is then shown working hard earning money as the legendary bicycle delivery boy. He meet his classmates returning from his delivery. Ayumu Nishizawa. His classmates accuses him as money loving. They soon find out that they are wrong about him since he is working merely because he needs to with his parents unemployed. It appears that his parents were all shortsighted dreamers. When he return from his delivery, he find out that he loses his job after his employer finds out he is still in high school. When he return home, his irresponsible parents has already spend the money he had earned from the job earlier and gave him a debt (156,804,000 yen) impossible to pay. The Yakuza came to take him away and sell his organs. Hayate escapes.

At a local park, Hayate thought of a way to get himself out of this predicament. He saw a young girl, Nagi Sanzen'in, near the vending machine that seems rich to him. Hayate decides to kidnap her but end up letting her mistaken his intention. Getting her home telephone number, Hayate tries to call Nagi's parents for a ransom but end up telling them his name instead. He give up. Returning back to the park, he meet a young woman named Maria who save him from the cold. Her help gives him courage to move on. He then saw a couple of kidnappers who harassed Nagi earlier at the vending machine trying to kidnap Nagi. Hayate gave chase on the bicycle and amazingly manage to catch up with them in a car. Despite being knocked over by the very car he is chasing, he still manage to get the kidnappers to surrender Nagi to them. In the end to repay what he did, Nagi decides to make him her new butler, merely seconds after he fainted due to injures suffered during the rescue attempt.

02 "Nagi Sanzenin's Mansion and a New Journey"
"Sanzen'in Nagi no Yashiki to, Aratanaru Tabidachi" (三千院ナギの屋敷と、新たなる旅立ち)

While still unconscious, he met Santa again. Santa told him that he is dead and he believed it right away. When Hayate finally wake up, he find himself in a room. He thought he is in heaven. Nagi, after sending the doctor off looking at Hayate a while ago, tell Maria that she really wants Hayate to be her butler. Maria think she will need to find out more about him to decide about this. Hayate, still thinking that he is in heaven, went to enjoy the exceptionally large bathroom where he meet Maria who is inside there as well. Being too long inside the hot bath, Hayate fell into unconsciousness due to his injuries reopening. When he wake up again, Maria is there to greet him. She then told him that he is currently inside Nagi's mansion and she is her maid as well. She find out about his debt as well. Nagi visits and tell Hayate to become her butler which he accepted without hesitation. Klaus, the head bulter of the Sanzen'in family hear this from Maria and object to it violently. Maria did not have the heart to throw him out with Hayate being enthusiastic about his work here. He soon shows that he can do the job well by showing off his experience with cleaning duties.

After looking at Nagi's manga and calling it a picture diary that made Nagi very angry, Hayate mistook her word and leaves the mansion, immediately has a run in with the money collectors that are after him. Nagi, still angry about it, is told by Maria about his debt. Without any intention to chase him out, Nagi decides to get him back. After all, he is her savior. The Yakuza prepares to sell him away again. When All looks hopeless for him, Mask the Money appears, striking down one of the Yakuza. Mask the Money is actually Nagi in disguise and that is found out by Hayate immediately. However, Nagi did not want him to admit it. Nagi express her wish to have Hayate back as her butler again. Hayate is glad to hear that. Nagi is preparing to pay his debt for Hayate in full cash. The Yakuza accept her payment willingly and left them alone. Hayate promises to repay Nagi by working for her until it is totally paid off. It is partially due to Hayate commenting about her manga again when Nagi initially did not want to pay her back. It seems that his mouth has done him a disfavor.

03 "The Beast, Robot, and Butler who Kind of Shout Love at the Center of the World"
"Sekai no Chūshin de Ai o Sakendari Sakebanakattari na Kedamono to Robo to Shitsuji" (世界の中心でアイを叫んだり叫ばなかったりな獣とロボと執事)

Hayate find out that he will need to work for 40 years before he can repay his debt to Nagi and feel fearful to be spend perhaps most of his life trying to do all that. Nagi warn him never to 'touch' Maria or else she will kill him herself. The next morning, Hayate wake Nagi up and discover a white tiger sleeping beside her. Klaus appear introducing himself to Hayate. Klaus introduce Tama to Hayate as well but Hayate refuse to believe Tama is Nagi's pet. That made Tama angry by first attacking Klaus and head directly towards Hayate. Hayate and Tama had a fight at a cyclamen flower garden and end up destroying the garden itself. The garden happens to be Maria's 'treasure' and when Maria find out, she immediately blame Nagi and Klaus for allowing that to happen. Maria explain why Tama is here. Nagi found it in Africa and decides to nurture it like a cat. Now, Tama is completely just a domestic cat who would protect Nagi no matter what it takes. Hayate feels that Tama is te same as he is since they were both saved by Nagi. However, Tama suddenly use human language to talk, causing Hayate to be rather speechless.

Klaus still object hiring Hayate as Nagi's butler. To resolve this, Maria suggest to test Hayate whether he is fit to be Nagi's butler. Klaus agree and set up the challenge. The challenge is to be able to defeat a nursing robot designated as Eight. When Nagi comment that Eight is rather ugly and cannot transform or combine, Eight become angry and attack Nagi. Hayate save her and the battle begins. In the end, Hayate manages to beat Eight after overcoming missile barrages and strong punches, electrocuting Eight to its defeat. Klaus cannot say anything else with his victory over Eight. Hayate, being electrocuted himself too, wakes up to find out that he stay as Nagi's butler. Nagi is there to congratulate him with extreme embarrassment. 

04 "First Mission ~This is Snake. No One Responds"
"Hajimete no Otsukai ~Kochira Sunēku. Daremo Ōtō Shinai" (はじめてのおつかい～こちらスネーク。誰も応答しない)

When cleaning the backyard, Hayate watches Nagi going somewhere with the talking Tama complaining about Hayate ignoring him in the background. He did not know where she is going until Maria tell him at the kitchen. Maria request Hayate to bring her lunchbox to her to Hakuou Academy. At the gates, Hayate meet Yukiji Katsura who refuse him to enter the school. She treat him as an intruder and refuse to let him in. However, Hayate is able to trick her and get into the school anyways. The trio (Izumi Segawa, Miki Hanabishi, Risa Asakaze) watches the action unfolding. Despite letting him in, Yukiji continues chase.

Hayate venture around the school trying to find Nagi but end up being attracted by the scenery there. He choose to rest at the dense forestry nearby after failing to find Nagi, observing the tall clocktower. It is then he find Hinagiku Katsura hanging out on a tree. Afraid of heights, she request Hayate to help her out, jumping onto him without warning. That almost knocked him out cold. Hayate find out why Hinagiku hanging out on the tree. She say she is trying to help a chick get back to its nest. But a crow soon arrives and intend to eat the chick. In an attempt to rescue the chick, Hayate manage to scare it off with a deliberate miss stone throw. It is after that they officially introduced themselves to each other.

Nagi finally find out that Hayate is in school to deliver her lunch. Hayate discover Hinagiku is the School Student Council President and is invited up to the student council officer in the clocktower. Yukiji get help to search for Hayate. She manage to find him herself. Up at the clocktower, Hayate is awe by the view seen up there. Hinagiku stay in due to her fear of heights. Seeing the view in school reminded Hayate of his lost school days. Eventually, Hinagiku tries to lead him to Nagi. But before they can head there, Yukiji appear right in front of them. Discovering that Yukiji is Hinagiku's elder sister, Hayate cannot stop Yukiji from attacking him. Instead, Hinagiku came to his aid and fight Yukiji. In the midst of this fight, Yukiji took away the lunchbox from Hayate. Trying to use that to threaten Hayate, Yukiji somehow end up falling from the clocktower but is saved by Hayate in time. However, the lunchbox is ruined. Expecting to be fired, Hayate finally find Nagi who amazingly knew what happened to him. She forgive him in the end. 

05 "Careless Gags and Kindness Bring Misfortune"
"Fuyōi na Boke to Yasashisa ga Fukō o Yobu" (不用意なボケと優しさが不幸を呼ぶ)

Someone came to visit Nagi who did not want to go to school in the morning. Hayate find out that this is usual from Maria who explain, being the only daughter of the family, Nagi is subjected to risk everyday. And in order to stay safe, staying indoors is the best way. Understanding that, Hayate still did not give up. A phone call came from Sakuya Aizawa, who dropped in when Nagi did not want to answer her call. She immediately made a gag without hesitation. Hayate wonder who she is and Maria is willing to explain. A daughter of the Aizawa family, she is a relative of the Sanzen'in and Nagi's childhood friend. Sakuya says her reason to visit Nagi is to check out her butler, to see how funny he is, hearing rumors about Nagi having a good time with him. She cannot believe Hayate is the one she is here to check out and find out he is not funny at all. Sakuya tries to teach him to be funny but that did not work too well at all despite Hayate's serious involvement.   .

Lacking of tea leaves, Maria request Hayate to buy them knowing another of Nagi's childhood friend is coming. She allow him to wear a cashmere coat but warn him never to ruin it. Nagi's childhood friend, Isumi Saginomiya, went missing again. Her bodyguards work desperately to recover her. Hayate faces tons of trouble wearing the cashmere coat out with every single turn possibly ruining that coat of his. He manage to make it to the park safely and meet Isumi Saginomiya at the vending machine. Asking if she is in trouble, Isumi told him that a friend told her never to talk to strangers. Hayate find her strange and knew if he continues to talk to her like this, he will get himself into trouble. But when he tries to walk away, Hayate did not have the heart to do so. He is afraid that she might get kidnapped if she continue on like this. Her bodyguards then arrives, believing that Hayate is abut to kidnap her. Hayate on the other hand thought they were kidnappers. He manage to take Isumi out of there but end up charging into a pond. The cashmere coat end up being ruined because of that. Hayate did not have the guts to return back to Sanzen'in family with the damaged cashmere coat. Isumi wishes to compensate him for the damaged cashmere coat but Hayate refuses. Isumi tries to inform Hayate that those who chased them were their bodyguards but Hayate refuse to listen. Eventually, Hayate bring Isumi to the gates of Nagi's mansion and leave her there.
