Text Box: Housings

Bunnies should be housed in proper cages with good ventilation and enough area for their daily activities. How do u know if the cage is of the right size for your bunnies?Roughly the length and breadth of the cage should be 2 times the length of your bunny and the height should be tall enough for your bunny the stand fully on its hind legs. This will allow your bunny to move about freely in their cages and rest, lying down on the floors of the cages.Though your cage may be big enough for their daily activities but they will still require some freedom outside their cages.Ocassionally you can bring your bunny out for a run in your house, your bacalony or your garden.Make sure that you monitor them as bunnies love to chew on items lying around in your house just make sure wires and dangerous items are out of their reach. If the bunny dirtied your house with their urine and poo den it’s time to litter train them.(U can refer to the littertraining article for more information)

Besides having a cage of the right size, you should also keep the environment of the cage as clean as possible. For cages with plastic bases u should get an absorbant litter (recommended: recycled paper litter) and spread it evenly throughout the whole cage, this will no matter where your bunnies urinate, the litter will absorb the urine lessening the odour from the urine and it also maintains the cleanliness of the cage. How to tell whether the litter is a good litter? I’ve to admit the greatest problem causing their cage to be dirty would be their urine.Cos if the bedding is lousy the cage will be filled with moist beddings attracting flies and of cos your bunnies wouldn’t like it either would u.So a good bedding is one that can absorb a large amount of urine and it’ll still remain dry or only becoming moist after a few days when it reaches a point that it can’t absorb liquid anymore. So far the bedding I can recommend will be breeders’ choice, that’s my personal preference but it is not cheap at all so you will have to be a bit smart on saving the litter.i used to notice the spots my bunny will often pee at and then I will put more litter at the spot, another way which is the best way is of course still litter-training them.

Even if u have the best litter,it’s advisable that u wash the cage and change the beddings every five days, cos eventually the litter will still be dirty and don’t forgot the poo will collect too.haha...so don’t assume you have a good litter and you only need to change the litter once a month, that would be terrible. And remember to clean the cages with soap..wash it clean and dry it with a cloth so that all the harmful bacterias and dust would be removed.Bunnies don’t really like them.

If you have a pull tray cage, you can put newspapers on the trays to save a bit of litter then if you think you it’s not enough for absorbing the urine you can add some litter on top of it.Clean the pull out tray often and change fresh newspapers often to maintain the cage in its tip top condition.

For bunny owners who use cages with metal wire floorings,it could be quite uncomfortable for your bunnies becos they do not have hard skin on their paws unlike dogs and the pressure their weight will act on their feet will be pretty much so u can roughly know how come they are so uncomfortable. That’s even worse for a fat overweight bunny. So it’s better if u can put rubber mats which have holes that aligns to that of the cage so that it will still allow the poo to drop through the holes.Straw mats will be a great choice too becos it will serve as a chewing toy for the bunny too.

Cages should also be situated in shaded and cool spots in your house to prevent them from getting the sun bleached effect, Momo’s nose turned brown cos of the sun bleach effect haha...it’s pretty cute though. But it doesn’t look nice if it’s on their coats cos patches and patches of fur will be brownish. And the patches will only be gone when they moult. It’s also better to place cages at a place above the ground like on a shelf.

<— that’s momo’s favourite straw mat, want to know how destructive he can be??? (look at the edges of the mat and u will get the answer..haha)

That’s MoMo in his cage,u can see how spacious the—>

cage is or is it how tiny he is?

(recommended cage size for dwarfs is 18’’(B)x24”(L)x24”(H))

With a litter tray,MoMo will pee and poo in the litter tray and you just need to change the litter in the litter tray frequently and his cage will be clean and odourless. (the grey pellets in the litter tray & around the cage are Breeders’ Choice Cat litter)

Placing the cage on the shelf can reduce much unwanted fears in the rabbit...i don’t know of what reasons but ever since I did that orlean orlean has tamed down and quietened down quite a lot.
