CLEETHORPES

and

THE HUMBER ESTUARY

Cleethorpes is on the east coast, more precisely on the Humber Estuary. It is now part of North East Lincolnshire. It attracts a lot of day-trippers and there are lots of attractions for all the family, the largest of which is Pleasure Island. The picture shows the miniature railway which runs from the Leisure Centre. The track has recently been extended and a lot of work is still being done. The engine pulling the train here is Toby.

Here's a good web-site with aerial pictures of the area. (Use the back button to return to our site)

We like Cleethorpes best in the winter and especially on weekdays when all the crowds have gone. We frequently walk along the sea front towards the yacht club when there is always something of interest to see. Last year because of the Foot and Mouth epidemic we spent a lot of time walking along Cleethorpes sea front!!

Left is a picture of the Boating Lake and right the post indicating the line of the Greenwich Meridian which is crossed while walking along towards the Yacht Club

There are always a lot of waders on the estuary. In the winter there are flocks of Golden Plover and Lapwing to be seen.   Other common sights include Redshank, Oyster Catcher, Shelduck, Turnstone, Heron, Black Backed Gull.

Official Ramblers Association walks were cancelled for weeks during 2001 but a few of us managed to get together for some unofficial walks on Wednesdays. We had a very successful walk from Barton over the Humber Bridge and to North Ferriby on May 9th. Pictures below.

15 August 2001. Happily the normal Grimsby/Louth branch RA programme of walks has now resumed.

23 November 2001. We paid a visit to Donna Nook to see the Grey Seals. About 240 pups had been born at the time of our visit and we took these photos. (I know this isn't quite the Humber Estuary but it's not too far from home.) On this visit we also saw a flock of around sixty Snow Buntings - a first for us.
