Care & Maintenance of the Betta
Caring for the Betta is one of the best aspects of keeping one.
It is extremely easy to care for one.
For one, they do not need and air pump to aerate the water because of their labyrinth.
As a matter of fact, the betta does not like fast moving water.
They very much prefer slow or stillwaters to live in.
Next thing would be feeding. Of course like everybody,they need to be fed.
If you want to take an extra precaution, you can feedthem twice a day.
Otherwise, once a day is more then sufficient.
It has also been noted that the betta can go for a few days without food.
So they won'tstarve to death if they are not fed for a few days.
But eventually, they do have to eat, so make it a point to feed them.
Waste disposal is critical for a healthy fish.
Too much accumalated wastes can lead to a very sick fish,
so it is recommended to remove any uneaten food left in the tank or solid wastes that can be found as these will pollute the water very quickly.
Water changing is also very important.
Like any creature on earth, they do let out waste, ie, ammonia.
High concentrations of ammonia can also cause a sick fish.
So depending on the amout of water you keep your betta in, the more water they have, the lesser frequency that you have to do a water change.
If they are living in a very small container or tank, u have to change the water much for frequently.
The general guideline is a 1 gallon tank should have the water changed at least once a week.
Finally, as far as possible, try to cover the top of the tank as the betta is a very good jumper.
You would not want to lose a betta because you did not cover it's tank and that it jumped out of the water and dried to death.
