Baal was a mighty warrior and the leader of the tribe of bandits that eventually found the young gray-skinned mutant out in the Egyptian desert. He took the child as his own and named him En Sabah Nur, which means 'The First One'.
Baal was responsible for En Sabah Nur's training, which made him such an unstoppable, deadly warrior. He also installed the basic philosophy of the bandit tribe into En Sabah Nur, that of Survival of the Fittest.
Ultimately the pharaoh Rama-Tut's soldiers, who sought to slaughter En Sabah Nur and all of the bandits, destroyed Baal. Baal died in his adopted son's arms. Driven to an inhuman rage, En Sabah Nur avenged his father's death. Since no one could withstand his wraith, he took the name Apocalypse.
