The ‘a journal’ section on the other hand, is basically Mary Shelley’s written account of her first encounter with her female creation and it serves as a record of their (mis)adventures. This section is more structured than the other sections of Patchwork Girl as it makes room for a linear reading. One node leads to the next and there is minimal plot variation. Take note however, that the journal entries were not penned by Jackson but instead, they are re-workings of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. This act of literary appropriation does not necessarily imply Jackson’s lack of proficiency as a writer.
