Do's and Don'ts with your Dachshunds

Do's

1. Get a companion for your dachshund. A small or medium dog of the opposite sex is usually best.

2. Get them spayed or neutered unless you plan to breed them. If you plan to breed them make sure you find good homes for all the puppies.

3. Teach them to walk beside you. Exercise in the park or in your yard will benefit both owner and dogs.

4. Talk to them. They will read you and understand what you mean.

5. Hold them on your lap. Dachshunds love to be close to their owners.

Don'ts

1. Don't let them eat onions or chocolate. Onions and chocolate will make your dogs sick and can be dangerous to their health.

2. Don't neglect their health:vaccinations, heartworm pills, and treatment for fleas and ticks is very important.

3. Don't let them develop bad habits such as jumping up on people or execisive barking. I use a spray bottle of water to divert my dogs attention and let them know their behavior is bad.

It's a Dog Story!

Nicholas was born on 11/8/1986 to Hanz Von Horne and Duchess Eilena Horne. He is registered with the American Kennel Club.

I traveled up the old Central Expressway to pick up my 8 week old puppy. He cuddled on my lap on the way home. Upon arrival he was greeted by Frankie, the cat who asserted his bigger size to let Nick know who's boss.

As Nick, grew up he and Frankie, the cat would take turns chasing each other. Nick would back into Frankie - I guess thinking his claws would hurt less around the tail than around the nose.

What's so special about Nick you ask?

1. As a puppy he chewed up my favorite pair of high-heels.

2. Have you ever heard of a dog who taught himself a trick? Nick was taught to shake his paw for a cracker. Of course he went a step further and started bringing me Jenny's bowl to get another cracker.

3. Nicholas loves heights. He loves to sleep on top of the sofa.

On our walks outside, Nick met O'Rilley a little brown female dog. He liked her and she liked him. One day before I could stop them Nick and O'Rilley were making puppies. Some weeks later Nick's daughter Jenny was born on 10/14/87. We also found homes for the other puppies, but this was a lesson to me. Most dogs should be spayed or neutered even if you walk them on a leash.

Although she is smaller in stature, Jenny is the dominant dog. When the idea strikes her she keeps Nick off the sofa and out of the doggie bed. Jenny saves her doggie crackers so she can terrorize him when he tries to get them. The most unique trait Jenny displays is having a barking fit when I go out the door.

Sadly, there is an end to my story about Nick and Jenny. Nick died on 2/20/03 and Jenny died on 2/29/04.

However there is a wonderful new beginning and that is Casey who was born on 1/29/04. I got Casey on 3/12/04 at 6 weeks old. He is a black and tan miniature dachshund. He runs with the speed of lightning and chews everything including me.

I will keep my visitors up- to- date on his antics with pictures and notes.

For now, this is the end of my story. I'm glad you came to visit.
