We're celebrating our ELEVENTH year as the source for information about SOLID GOLD
the MUSIC SHOW of the 80's.
When I first started this web site, it was the only one.
I had a few pages and a couple of pictures.
The site certainly has grown!! And this really has been a group effort.
I hope you'll take a moment to visit my THANK YOU page.
I've been very fortunate to have had so many people contribute to creating this web site.
THANK YOU to everyone who has helped, visited, and/or emailed me!

A BRIEF HISTORY
SOLID GOLD - created by BRAD LACHMAN and directed for the first five seasons by LOUIS HORVITZ - was originally intended to be a ONE TIME ONLY TWO HOUR SPECIAL in 1979. The SHOW earned high ratings and made its debut as a one hour nationally syndicated weekly show in September 1980! From the Fall of 1980 until the summer of 1984, the show was taped on STAGE 6 at KTLA STUDIOS. SOLID GOLD then moved to a new "home" - STAGE 29 at PARAMOUNT STUDIOS!
(STAGE 29 would also be used for the JOAN RIVERS SHOW and the ARSENIO HALL SHOW; both JOAN and ARSENIO did guest appearances on SOLID GOLD!)

The show also got a new "look" when it moved - "futuristic, state-of-the-art dazzling geometric shapes and computerized lighting." And was the highest rated weekly syndicated show that season!
The SIXTH SEASON (1985-86) brought a few changes. The show was now broadcast in STEREO. DIONNE WARWICK, the original HOST, returned. And the focus would be on "CONTEMPORARY HITS" with the top performers in the MUSIC INDUSTRY appearing on the show.

"SPIN-OFFS"
SOLID GOLD HITS, a half hour show which aired Monday - Friday in the summer of 1984, was hosted by GRANT GOODEVE who is best known for playing DAVID BRADFORD on "EIGHT IS ENOUGH"!
There was also a Las Vegas show called the SOLID GOLD REVUE!
At the end of the 1985-86 season, the PRODUCERS decided to TAKE THE SHOW IN A DIFFERENT DIRECTION. As a result, DIONNE WARWICK, the choreographer and several dancers were replaced.

THE "VOICE OF SOLID GOLD"
ROBERT W. MORGAN, a well-respected and popular Los Angeles Disc Jockey served as the show's "announcer". He died in May, 1998. There is a link to the ROBERT W. MORGAN BOSS-OGRAPHY, a website which has detailed information, at the bottom of this page.

TICKET

THE TAPINGS
The shows were taped - two at a time - bi-weekly on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday usually two to three weeks before the scheduled air date.
There were two tapings each day - one in the morning and the other in the afternoon.
Tickets were free. Seating was on a "first come; first serve basis"!
The doors closed one hour before taping began.
The shows were not taped "chronologically". Rather, different segments were taped at different times and then edited to give the appearance of having been taped as a complete show!

THE SPECIALS
There were also SPECIAL 2 HOUR SHOWS - including A SOLID GOLD CHRISTMAS, SOLID GOLD COUNTDOWN, SOLID GOLD SALUTES THE SONGS OF SUMMER as well as SOLID GOLD AND SUMMER LOVE!

TONI BASIL, perhaps best known to "Eighties" Music Fans for her #1 hit song "MICKEY", is also a talented DANCER and CHOREOGRAPHER! She has done CHOREOGRAPHY for BETTE MIDLER and DAVID BOWIE as well as other performers. She was also in an episode of LAVERNE and SHIRLEY! Whenever TONI appeared on "SOLID GOLD", she CHOREOGRAPHED the dance routines for her songs!

And for information about SOLID GOLD'S CHOREOGRAPHERS
KEVIN CARLISLE AND ANITA MANN, visit their pages!
