How To Approach A Friend In Trouble

You know your friend is in trouble but you don't know what to do about it - here's help!

Difficulty: Hard

Time Required: As long as it takes!

Here's How:

1. Know your facts. What is it that you think your friend is struggling with? Why do you think there is a problem?

2. Get another opinion. You never know it may just be in your mind. Be sure other people have seen a change in your friend as well.

3. Be prepared for opposition or even hostility from your friend.

4. Be prepared to repeat yourself. It probably will take more than once for this to get through to your friend.

5. Be prepared to be shunned. Your friend may turn his/her back on you. Don't get mad or frustrated. Keep trying and never let up.

6. Stay calm. Your friend may start screaming at you, but keep a level head. Don't lose your temper.

7. Stay on topic. Don't let your conversation stray. Your friend will then think he/she is getting away with it. Keep with it. Don't let up.

8. Have a list of help resources made and ready. If your friend does want your help you should be prepared to give it right away.

9. Encourage your friend to seek professional counselling and if necessary, medical help.

10. If you continue trying to help your friend, only to fail, don't be afraid to seach for other help (parents, counsellor, etc.)

11. Do whatever it takes to "wake your friend up" and get them the help they need.
