Believe the Hype!
18 March 2004
Dee’s Café is a haven those looking to play some pool, drink
cheap beers, play some tunes and have great late-night, half-sober
conversations. In fact more than one brilliant scheme has been hatched from the
booth on the bottom floor near the dart board. So when I heard that three of my
favorite boys had the idea to start a side project called Lovely Recordings it
didn’t surprise me at all that Dee’s provided just enough lubricant for the
name to slide right out. Lovely.
So let me break it down for ya:
Created from the collective brain child of Wynkataug Monk’s
John Dziuban, Shade’s Brad Kiefer and everyone’s favorite Flash Brad Hlavach,
Lovely Recordings was born.
Lovely’s purpose as a label is primarily to further the
creativity of the bands on their roster which include Pittsburgh’s Shade, The
Wynkataug Monks, Olympus Mons and Hamilton Ontario’s Chrome Yellow Co. They
are, in every sense, a tight group working together to achieve the common goal
of success.
With the wealth of bands Lovely Recordings has already
invested in (and those yet to come) success seems like an easy goal to achieve.
But it is their affirmative collective attitude that I foresee bringing them
the most success.
Bent on propelling local, like-minded musicians and artists,
Lovely Recordings promises to do everything it can to promote and cross promote
its bands. That means passing along and sharing booking info, helping them to
record, helping them assemble and get out press releases and pushing each other
to a higher creative plain.
Perhaps the most beautiful part of Lovely Recordings is
their genuine attitude and love of music. These fellas don’t bother getting
jealous when other local bands, like the Modey Lemon, sign with bigger labels.
In fact they don’t see it as an issue of jealousy at all. Seeing a hard-working
local band get recognition evokes feelings of happiness and pride in the ‘burgh
for these guys.
It’s one thing to sit around in your basement smoking weed
and drinking Old German talking about how cool the scene could be… it’s quite
another thing to take action. The three co-owners of Lovely Recordings are the
kind of guys who have the initiative and the love to lead Pittsburgh to the
next artistic revolution.
