Medical: Bar Harbor is home to the Bar Harbor Medical Center, a modern, 49-bed facility located on Bayberry Lane near the causeway. It provides 24-hour emergency and cardiac care, as well as cardiac intensive care, pediatric and laboratory services, and respiratory thearapy.  Medical facilities are also available in Northeast Harbor, Southwest Harbor and Ellsworth. The region's largest hospital, Eastern Maine Medical Center, is located 45 miles away in Bangor. Small emergency treatment centers are scattered throughout Mt. Desert Island, as well as on some of the larger offshore islands.

Postal Service: Even the smallest villages have US Postal Service, though the main office is located in downtown Bar Harbor. The island is also serviced by Federal Express, UPS and privately owned courier services.

Religious Services: Numerous churches serve the communities on Mt. Desert  Island, but the nearest synagogue is located 20 miles away in Ellsworth. In the summer, ecumenical services are held at sunrise atop Cadillac Mountain, at Blackwoods and the Seawall campground.

Media: The area has three local, weekly papers: the "Bar Harbor Times," the "MDI Islander" and the "Ellsworth American." Various other publications include the "Town Hill Guardian," which is more tabloid reporting than an actual news agency. Bar Harbor has affiliates with all of the major broadcasting networks, as well as independent television stations for Fox and UPN. There are two radio stations, WBHM-AM and WMDI-FM, both locally owned and operated.

Service Stations: Several major gas companies have stations throughout the area, including Shell, Amoco and Texaco, as well as individually owned companies. Auto repair shops and tire dealerships are also available in Bar Harbor and nearby Ellsworth, 20 miles north on Route 3. Towing is provided by Sal's Fix & Tow in downtown Bar Harbor.

Tide Tables: Nearly all the local newspapers and guidebooks include seasonal tables of daily tides, sunrise and sunset. The Bar Harbor Port Authority keeps an accurate record in their building on Bar Island.

Chamber of Commerce: The Chamber of Commerce is located near the Village Green in downtown Bar Harbor, and provides booklets and information about the city free of charge, as well as a website www.barharborinfo.com. Mt. Desert Chamber of Commerce (representing the towns of Hall Quarry, Northeast Harbor, Otter Creek, Pretty Marsh, Seal Harbor and Somesville) can be found in Seal Harbor. The Southwest Harbor-Tremont Chamber of Commerce also has a website www.acadiachamber.com.

Telephone: Phone service is provided by Northeast Bell, Sprint, MCI and a few independent serivces.  Cellular phone service is maintained by AT&T, Sprint and MaineLine, Inc.
