-=-=-= NEW YEAR'S EVE 2004 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -=-=-= As in years past, nearly 2 billion people counted down as the ball dropped in New York City's Times Square. Starting at 10, they worked their way down to the final second, and a squadron of B52s flew overhead. The idea was to drop tons of confetti at midnight, however someone had other plans. No one could hear the whistling object that came hurtling toward the shouting, happy throng, and soon Times Square was lit up by something far more deadly than streetlights. Thus it began. After midnight, there was nothing left but ghosts and buildings in New York City. The neutron bomb dropped that New Years Eve killed millions, leaving most of the skyscrapers unaffected, though a few at ground level were destroyed, nothing more than smoking craters remaining. The Federation of Modern Terrorists took the credit, declaring war on the Free World with that vicious, unprovoked attack. At the same time New York was hit, so were London, Moscow, Stockholm, Berlin and other large cities. The entire world was instantly thrust into horrified shock, and immediately joined forces in combat against countries from which these terrorists originated. A war begun when billions upon billions of innocent people died in one act of senseless violence. A world war no one wanted to openly call World War III. Instead, they termed it the "War on Terrorism," or similar euphemistic phrases used for wars that no one wants to call wars. The United States called for world action, and formed yet another coallition with her allies to combat terrorism on a grand scale. Millions of men and women converged on the Middle East, this time determined to free the world of this threat forever. There was no one person alive who didn't feel the horror of that fateful night. Small town or large city, every community, every citizen, every country was affected. Like in other places, the citizens of Larson, Maine were outraged and sent their husbands, wives, sons and daughters to fight for the cause of freedom. Those volunteers went because it was necessary, and because they wanted to preserve the ideals of small town America, to keep safe their home. None of them had an inkling the war would come any where near their town. What no one knew was the government base just outside of Larson was actually a research and development facility where scientists were working on a weapon that would change the face of war. A weapon of such mass destruction it was known only to a select few in the Pentagon, kept under tighter security than any other military installation in the country. No one questioned anything, no one suspected the truth. No one had any idea they were in danger.
