“Who are you?” He whispered. “Why do you look so much like me?”
The shadow did not speak. The shadow with dark hair and dark eyes, which looked like a darker version of him, all bright crimson and gold…
Shadows should not be so bright!
Lance hastily pulled away from the mirror. For a moment, it looked as though their fingertips would have touched, and then what might have happened?
He did not want to know.
A knock sounded on his door. “Lance? May I come in?”
“Red? Y-Yes!” The Dragon Master called, hastily patting down his hair. Pink and blue, pale shades… those were his colors. Why then, did he see a shadow every time he looked in the mirror?
Who was that man?
Red came in with a cheerful smile, ruby eyes bright. “Tada! I made you tea and cookies!” The cookies were slightly burnt around the edges, but the tea had gone well, under Agatha’s watchful eye, and Red remembered that Lance really liked this type of green tea.
Lance half-smiled, and beckoned Red to the table with four chairs in his room, setting down a placemat for the hot food. “Thank you, Red.”
“No problem.” The Champion grinned, setting the tray down without spilling anything. “You seemed down, so I came to see you.”
Lance blinked. “Well… it’s nice of you to be so worried about me. Why?”
Red paused, already reaching for a cookie. They were oatmeal with raisins, but as he bit into the first one, he decided that they had come out well. He chewed and swallowed before he answered.
“Because we’re friends, Lance, right?”
Lance nodded, but couldn’t help feeling as though Red was keeping something back. He poured tea for them both and helped himself to the cookies.
At least the mirrored closet doors in his room were dark, hidden by shadow…
And hopefully Red wouldn’t see…
No such luck. Red eyed Lance’s reflection in the mirrors, before he blinked again. The Shadow did look a lot like Lance, but the hair and eyes were different, and even the clothing was slightly off.
Was it an optical illusion?
“Red” Lance said in alarm, as Red walked over to the mirrors. “What are you doing?”
The Champion said nothing, as he placed his fingertips against the glass. The Shadow reached up and touched him, and a chill raced down the Champion’s spine.
His eyes widened in alarm. This was…!
“Red!” Lance rushed over, attempted to pry Red away, but he vanished into the mirror, reappearing at the Shadow’s side.
What was going on here?
“He is not yours.” The Shadow spoke. “You shall meet the one who truly belongs with you soon enough. You may have already met him. Ash Ketchum from Pallet Town is his name, and he is your destiny. Red… is mine.”
Red nodded, looking almost apologetic. “I’m sorry, Lance. But he’s right.”
“What’s going on here?” Lance demanded. “You can’t just kidnap the Champion like that!”
“But Red is not meant to be Champion.” His shadow sounded almost disappointed. “You are. You are Johto League Champion, Lance. Red… Red belongs to Indigo – to Kanto, and in his own world.”
Red smiled sadly. “Sorry, Lance. I should have figured it out, but you did act like him… but you see, even though we’re friends… Wataru is the one I really love.”
Wataru… his shadow…
He watched as they faded into mist, before he sighed. This was too strange. He would pass it off as a hallucination, except…
“Lance?” A voice spoke in his headset. “You have a mission at Lake of Rage.”
The G-man nodded, releasing his Dragonite, and that night, he thought of brown eyes and an innocent smile.
Ash Ketchum, hmm?
He had a feeling he’d be seeing the boy again.
