“Lance, are you all right?”

The soft voice broke into his musings, and Lance turned, trying to force his fingers to uncurl from their fisted position. The idea that Team Rocket had created a method to force pokemon evolution – their so-called Evolution Inducement Wave – was horrible. Dragonite had destroyed their laboratory, and he had captured the Red Gyarados that had resulted from the transformation, but even so…

There was more to be done in the future. He would have to personally find Professor Sebastian again, and make sure he would not make another machine.

“No.” The Dragon Master said honestly. The Officer Jennies were mopping up the base now, taking all the Rockets into custody, but he was sure most of them were cannon fodder. It was a pity they had neglected to capture Sebastian. Even Tyson was solely a Grunt… but Agatha might be able to extract some useful information from him.

“I-Is it my fault?”

Lance turned to look at Ash fully, seeing almost-sad brown eyes, and he felt lighter. “No.” He said simply. “I’m just sorry for the pokémon.”

Ash nodded, accepting that explanation, and Dragonite shifted impatiently, ready to leave this town.

They flew off into the sunset, and as Ash waved, Lance smiled.

It was not all lost, not yet, not when innocence still remained, and he prayed that Ash would stay innocent just a little while longer, because...

It always made things better.
