Looking Glass Runaway Program

Looking Glass Runaway Program is available 24 hours a day to provide crisis intervention services for runaway and homeless youth, ages 11-17, and their families.

This program offers runaway and troubled youths (under 18 years of age) a means of getting off the streets and obtaining help with a wide range of problems. Youths can access YCC services by asking for help at any of the 325 locations which display the yellow and black SAFE PLACE logo.
Current SAFE PLACE locations include all Lil' Champ Food Stores, Wendy's Old Fashioned Hamburgers, Wal-Mart Stores, Sam's Club and fire stations throughout northeast Florida.
All a youth needs to do to obtain help is ask an employee at one of these official locations to contact YCC. A counselor will talk with the youth to assess and stabilize the situation. Based on the need and the wishes of the family, the youth will be transported to their home or a YCC facility. If the youth goes to a YCC facility, the family is notified immediately.

Operates three Tucson homes and one Prescott home which provide temporary shelter care and counseling for youth ages 8-17 who are abused, neglected, runaway, and/or homeless and who are experiencing family problems. Also operates the Cochise County Children's Center in Huachuca City for children ages 0-18 who are at risk. Youths remain at the shelters until their situation is stabilized and they can either return home or find an alternative situation; runaway youth must agree to notify their parents of their whereabouts within 24 hours; average stay is 7-30 days; individual, group and family counseling, informal rap sessions, and transportation to medical care are provided as needed; all houses offer 24 hour hotlines for assistance, information, and referrals. Transitional Independent Living Program

Transitional living apartments (6-9 months) for youth ages 16 1/2-18 who are homeless and meet program guidelines; must be willing to attend school and/or work, and save a portion of income while learning independent living skills; will also accept teen mothers with one child under age 3. Program coordinator and house parents will provide guidance, assistance, and support.

This is an excellent book for kids and parents. Evan himself was a runaway for 2 years and he shares his experiences on the street, many of which were terrifying, and tells how he was able to survive. He also has many references listed for help for runaway kids as well as parents of runaways. He gives solid advice to kids who have set their minds to running away and points out many different things that a kid should think about before running...many things that kids just normally don't think about. A must reading for any kid who is contemplating running away. This is an excellent book for parents to purchase for resources or to give to their kids to read if they feel that their child may be at risk to be a runaway. It can be purchased at:
