A Forgotten Dream?

One day a year, we remember the Dreamer
honor the man -his life, his legacy, his sacrifices
his living and dying for his country, his dream

One day a year, the noble words of his dream
spoken so long ago, echo vividly across the years
reminding us of his struggle and his vision

One summer day, before the emancipator’s shrine
the world and history watched the Dreamer speak
sharing the dream he lived for with his audience

“I have a dream that my four children will one day live
in a nation where they will not be judged by the color
of their skin but by the content of their character”

One day a year, people look up from everyday life
to ask if America has or ever will live up to its promise
the simple creed "…that all men are created equal"

One spring day, at a hotel in the city of Memphis
the Dreamer was struck down by the hate he fought
Did America forget his dream when he died?

One day, I want to be able to look at America, stand up
proclaim fulfillment of the Dreamer’s dream, "Free at last!
Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!"
