He served as the governor of Bei Ping for the Later Han. He studied together with Liu Bei under Liu Zhi. He led an elite army made up of the troops from Bai Ma, earning him the nickname the "General of Bai Ma." He displayed his skills in the Yellow Turban campaign, but was later assassinated by Yuan Shao.
