MOTHER INDIA

CLASSIC INDIAN CINEMA

Mother India (1957) Starring Nargis, Sunil Dutt, Rajendra Kumar and Raj Kumar. 174 minutes. Released by EROS/B4U. Transfer by Media Dimensions- duplicated from DEI. Full screen. English subtitles on dialogue.

Picture quality is very good with no noticeable artifacts or pixelization. Colors are sharp for a 42 year old film and the images are finely detailed. The audio was originally recorded in mono, but has been upgraded to 5.1 DD for this DVD. The sound is marvelous and clear with no distortion. It features a pleasant bass which resonates nicely on your home theater subwoofer. The audio sounds great even without a home theater set-up. This is the best mono to 5.1 DD transfer I've heard. Certainly better than WEG's poor attempts (Ajoob), or even the fine job done on "Gone With The Wind." All the songs sound wonderful, especially the classics: "Duniya Mein Hum" and "Holi Aaye Re." It's a shame that they weren't translated.

Mother India is a beautifully filmed and directed Indian film epic, which has been rightly praised through the years for it's timeless story of a mother's devotion to her children. Nargis gives an acting tour-de force performance for the ages, which along with the outstanding audio and fine video is worth the price of the DVD. Highly Recommended.

Note that there is one major operational problem on this DVD. On my player, the DVD menu button on the remote cannot get you to the main menu. Luckily, there is a solution. You can access the movie and the main menu easily, if you use the title button. Still, this should have been corrected before it left the factory.
