A long time ago, I caved in and signed up for that Science Fiction Book Club thing that kept getting mailed to me. |
|

|
While doing so, I had this theory that I may as well get as many expensive books as I can for my free ones. One of them was a 'Science Fiction Book Club Exclusive' (not that I knew what that meant at the time) called Xenogenesis by Octavia E. Butler. |

I had never heard of her before but after reading the three stories contained in that hardcover omnibus I had to find out more! |

There aren't many websites on the internet dedicated to Ms. Butler. She doesn't have a www.octaviaebutler.com official page or anything and her fan pages are few and far between. Most aren't updated that often, or just contain little pieces of information. This is sad as she is an amazing author. Ms. Butler is my favorite science fiction writer. |

Being mostly a horror fan, I am surprised that I like a single science fiction writer so much. Even more surprising is that she is a female writer. I tend to not like female writers much. I haven't read so much of a female author's work since Anne Rice (before I got sick of her constant superhero Lestat's whining and desire to sleep with men) and Judy Blume when I was a child. |

Another thing I realized after searching for Octavia Butler on the Internet is that she is black! Shocker, as I don't recall ever reading a black author either. Now I know why most of her stories contain excellent interactions with with people who experience slavery or something similar, are taken from their people, and/or must assimilate into a new strange culture. Being a white male who has never had much experience with the feelings of this history and no one to tell me what it's like (I just could never bring myself to ask my black friends to tell me about their family's history, but I do wish they'd bring it up so I could learn), Octavia's stories are both entertaining and feel like learning experiences. |
