Date: Wed, 17 Sep 2003 17:55:59 -0000 Subject: [RicePaper] Re: Elitist Greetings!!! I agree with Helan and Chisa's comments, and now I'll add a few extra extrapolations here. First, as a writer, I demand to uh...see and uh...'edit' and hentai material onsite, purely for 'editing' reasons... Ahem...lost track for a moment folks. >:) Now, what has impressed me with L5R fiction is that the majority of writers write fan written fiction and not fan fiction. By this I mean: Fan Written Fiction is researched and does not deal or interfere with established characters, storyline, locations, etc. Fan Fiction is often a bragging story of one's persona/character in the genre/world they have set themselves in. Example: We'll use my character, the ever old Hida Togeriso, Crab Clan Lorekeeper. In Fan Written Fiction, I would describe him talking to Kuni Utagu as we walked along the Kaiu Wall, perhaps watching Hida Kuon fight a few trolls. Since this deals with Kuni Utagu, this would take palce before the creation of the Tower of Fear and the loss of 6-7 of the Crab's Kaiu Watchtowers. In Fan Fiction, Togeriso would be the killer of Utagu, never allowed the Shadowlands to take any of the Watchtowers, and personally responcible for the deaths of Kyoden, Daigotsu, and Shahai. This while I ate the Egg of Pan Ku and slept with Bayushi Kachiko. The above examples are reasons for some of the conditions I place on the SCs I hold. Now there is some crossing of the lines between these two distinctions. Kakita Kaori's KyD story is great Fan Written Fiction, though it might seem to appear as Fan Fiction. Places like the RPS allow writers to deal with Fan Written Fiction. Open forums, like fan fiction dotcom, are mainly sounding boards for people who write little stories that sound more like their personal fantasies (the early days of fanfiction dotcom might as well been Penthouse Forum). Thats just my two cents on the matter, but there is one other thing, something I am guilty of as well. Praise and Criticism. Someone allows us very lucky readers to gaze into a bit of their creativity. Whether good or bad, we should try to comment on their stories whenever we can. I don't just mean on RPS either. As writers, we know the nervousness and stress of writing and then posting. For myself, I still get nervous each time I post a story (okay, that hasn't happened lately but I'm taking steps this Saturday to get my computer fixed). I still smile when i hear from someone who takes the minute or two to say 'I liked it' or even 'I disliked it'. Course, I want to know more in either case, but even a brief note like that can keep the muse moving when you run out of Miles Davis CDs. I always ask that people contribute some comment on any story I write or that is written for the SCs. Hopefully such comments are constructive and illuminating, and help the writer advance in his or her field. We do this for free and for fun, but we all would like to know that what we wrote has been noticed. See ya!!! Self-insertion is virtually every L5R fan-written story. What Togeriso described as Fan Fiction is actually more of an Alternate Universe setting. Of course, it can be argued that there's no such thing as an AU fiction in L5R anymore thanks to Fortune and Winds (Quoting) : "Within Yume-Do lies other worlds that exist deep in possibility. These sub-realms are very similar to Ningen-do - the physical laws are identical, and there is nearly always an empire of Rokugan, though subtly (or in some cases, not so subtly) different." The RPG crew then proceeds to blatantly gives R2K canon L5R existence :-). So essentially, that means that if you write a story about Togeriso being better than Kuon, saving the wall from falling and killing Daigotsu, Shahai and so on, you're not actually describing a fairy tale that has nothing to do with how things happened. It'S actually a very canon story of how things really DID happen in one of those Sub-Realms ;-). And then since it'S actually possible (sayeth F&W) to travel from Ningen-do to these subrealms, it would even be possible for the savior Togeriso to actually be Togeriso-from-the-L5R-realm-Rich-and-co-writes-about who went in one of those sub-realm without realizing it and actually changed everything then came back to the real L5R... And yes, that means that there's actually a sub-reality somewhere where Naseru is a cross-dresser with a thing for a very naive Hachi who's desperate for girls (while every male in Rokugan is desperate for him), while Tokei is showing a thing or two about the celestial heavens to Miyako - and doing unspeakable things in the woods to goblin. It's also a world where Gisei threatened Kaneka that the Crane would all leave Rokugan if he became emperor. And there's another where a hapless trio of adventurers (A Mantis, a...naga-man thing and a...thing, period (albeit the girls of the list insist it's a SEXY thing))have so far defeated on their own self and with a healty dose of pure blind luck and outright stupidity about half the Onisus :-D -Himoto Who finds the notion of there being a place out there in the L5R universe where the Very Private Journals really happened REAL scarry :-D |

I've gotten drunk tons of time, but never once did it occur to me to move while drunk. I guess I just haven't hit that plateau yet. I'm guessing it's somewhere after the getting drunk and wanting to balance your check book stage. > We're going to get another friend of ours to scan them > soon, now that we know someone else with a scanner. Some stores that do photo processing have scanners and will burn photos onto cd. It's not that expensive either considering the saved time involved. *shrug* With your wedding photos coming up you might want to look into that. I think they can even store them as printing quality files so you can use them as proofs just in case anything happens to your origional wedding photos. -Kyle |

And > carrying them all with you. And using them. Hey, that's not so implausible! All you have to do is off Shiba Mirabu (he's one of the sucky champions, it shouldn't be hard) and nick the Celestial Sword of the Phoenix. Then you find Aikune and trade him the Sword and Championship for the Last Wish (and make him tell it to be friends with you). Then BURNINATE him with the Wish, and get the Sword back. Use the Last Wish to find the Dark Covenent of Earth, use it, and make Nokatsu give you Yakamo's Claw. Take Yakamo's Claw to the Crab, enlist the aid of Soul of Kuni Yori, and trade it for the Celestial Sword of the Crab. Then, naturally, BURNINATE Kuon (you will have to seduce him to make sure he's naked and not wearing the Crab Clan Armour, or this could seriously backfire). Hand over the Crab Clan to the True Champion (Kuroda), in exchange for help in scouring Rokugan looking for the Black Scrolls. Ask for the False Hoturi as a personal secretary. After you're tired of playing with the FH (this may take some weeks), BURNINATE him and nab the Egg of P'an Ku. Travel northwards. Along the way, stop off at the Shiro Matsu and point out to Nimuro that there are a load of oni hordes ravaging the countryside. In the general confusion, nick the Celestial Sword of the Lion. Oh, and Revenge (you don't REALLY believe that Ginawa gave it away, did you?). This will be needed. Continue northwards, through the Unicorn lands (feel free to BURNINATE the Moto stables, and take advantage of the distraction to steal their Sword), up to Dragon lands. Here, it will be neccessary to seduce Satsu. This should not be too hard. Having wrapped the Scaly One around your little finger, persuade him that you'd love to meet his dad. When he obediently summons Hoshi, QUICKLY clone him with the Egg of P'an Ku. Watch the Hoshis fight (suggest putting up an indestructible forcefield with the Last Wish first). When the dust has cleared, be thoughtful - make the Dragon some new mountains with the Last Wish before you leave. Oh, and take the Celestial Sword of the Dragon. Now you have an Evil Half-Dragon under your control, finding the Black Scrolls should be easy! Dispatch the False Hoshi to find them for you (tell him to do whatever it takes to the Phoenix to make them give it up). Once you have the Black Scrolls, take a boat (or the False Hoshi - he floats) to the Mantis Isles. Ressurect Yoritomo using Return of the Fallen Lord and offer to swap him for Yoritomo's Kama. Take Yoritomo's Kama. In the general heart-warming scene of touching father-daughter reunion, nick the Celestial Sword of the Mantis from Kumiko's obi. Head back to mainland Rokugan and Crane lands. Once there, crack open the Wasting Disease scroll, the Undead Hordes scroll, and any other destructive one you feel like (there's no point to this, it's just traditional towards the end of a story arc). Make sure to salt the earth, too. After you've had enough fun with that, head over to ol' Kurohito's place and offer to swap the Celestial Sword of the Crane for your Bloodsword. He won't be able to refuse. By this time, the Scorpion Sword should have discretely materialised outside your hotel room door one night, as the Scorpion are a) no fools, b) well informed, and c) can work out which way the wind is blowing. Now that you have the Celestial Swords of the Crab, Crane, Dragon, Lion, Mantis, Phoenix, Scorpion and Unicorn, Yakamo's Claw, The Last Wish, and Yoritomo's Kama, you want to be able to wield them all at one time to get the maximum number of bonuses (just think of all the +1/+1s from the Kama!). This is the tricky bit. Find the Black Scroll that gives Taint. Use it. VERY VERY RAPIDLY (before you go insane from instant 10 ranks of Taint-gain) read Beast of Fu Leng. Congratulations! You are now an akutenshi! Turn yourself into the Walking Horror of Fu Leng too, just for kicks. By now you should have attracted more than a little attention from the big Fu himself. Use your unique hold over him ("Give me the powers I want, or I'll read the last scroll and put you in the body of Toku!") to manifest the "Multiple Arms" Shadowlands power. Congratulations! You are now utterly broken! *ahem* I had a serious point to make, but it's long since gone out the window. It'll come back to me... Helen |

Chisa's kids are happy, well-adjusted youngsters. Reiko's children are tomboy tear-aways, forever getting into trouble for running around shooting arrows at the other kids and kicking balls through windows. Gisei's children are immaculately dressed at all times. They spend HOURS in front of the mirror every morning. Uitukake's kids? They're the quiet, intellectual ones found lurking at the corners of the playground with their noses in books. Watch out for Helen's brood. They're easy to recognise. They're the surly, gangly teenagers dressed in black with shit-kicker boots who mope around the place listening to angst-filled lyrics. Occasionally one of them is cheerful, but they soon get over it. They have a distressing habit of abducting other people's children and tormenting them. Samoshii's kids are the flip-side of Helen's - they're the New Romantics. Sometimes angsty, but in a sweet sort of way. Daniel's family is just too large to count. Do you not lovingly plan every minute plot detail at least two months before daring to set the hallowed nib of your pen to the pristine white perfection of paper?? One writer! One pen! One draft! Um... *shuffles own notebook out of sight* > I'm really wary about marrying Reiko outside of the clan simply because she's a real > bitch already. Remember, this is a gal who killed at least 21 > goblins just to prove to the Crab that she could. :) > On the other hand...I wonder if Hida Mamoru has a son... Yep, come to the Crab. We're all nasty tough people. And we need all the psycho-bitches we can get. :-) (and Kuni Mudaran is currently free... though currently in extremely bad standing with his Clan) > Winged, glowy-eyed, clawed, bloodthirsty > Tainted Berserkers need love too! From now on, this is my battle cry at CCG tournaments. :-) >> If Kaneka wins GenCon...? *grin* Come south, the climate's lovely! I don't know...people should probably only worry if Mantis > manage to win the Voice of the Emperor. > How scary would THAT be? We've (Team Jade Cat members) been running through the various unlikely iterations possible... "After my brother Sezaru ascended to the throne, and my Sister became the UN peacekeeper extraordinaire, I was driven mad by the death of my dear brother Kaneka, and have joined the Dragon. signed, Hitomi Naseru" Or how about... "Following his coronation, Toturi II (formerly Toturi Sezaru) will travel west to take up residence in the new Imperial Palace at Shiro Moto. There, the glories of the Imperial Court will be rebuilt, under the guidance of the Emperor's Left Hand and the watchful eye of our new Chancellor, Hitomi Vedau. Lord Kuon and the Underhand are even now working to ensure the Emperor's security. As decreed by the Voice of the Empire, Matsu Tsudao, our glorious Clan will take up its duties as the new Emperor's Right Hand. I know some of you are a little .. inexperienced .. in your new duties, but fortunately a great war leader has offered his allegiance to our Clan. I would like you all to welcome the new Commander of the Imperial Legions, Doji Kaneka!" (Doji Kuruhito, speech to the Crane Clan, shortly before his early retirement 'for medical reasons') Or my personal favourite: " I, Yoritomo Naseru, in the name of our glorious and exalted Emperor Kaneka I, may He drop dea^H^H^H^H^H His reign last ten thousand years, doth proclaim and issue this manifesto from the imperial capital of Kyuden Hitomi. Our loyal ninja, the Hida, who happily have found a new task in our realm after their expulsion from their ancestral lands, report the most unfortunate death of our brother Toturi Sezaru in battle against the force of the Ninth Kami. Meanwhile, our sister Shosuro Tsudao sends greetings from her husband Shosuro Furuyari..." Fear the pants/shirtless ninja... :-) Helen |

Where is my Kachiko/Hoturi? > > What about Toturi/Hatsuko? Argh! Interesting to note that, while romance only rarely features in the Gold-arc Friday fictions, it is a staple of fan-fiction. Thinking back, it seems to me that at least 80% of Ricepaper tales have featured some sort of romantic sub-plot. I wonder if this is more due to the comparative demographics (currently we've only got Story Guys - and, as a side point, the lead writer is single), or the fact that fanfic generally can't use world-shaking plots, so has to settle for more intimate, personal stories. > Weell.. The last Friday fic sort of implied something between > Shaitung & Nakamura (which could get interesting, if Nakamura wasn't > such a completely null character). Something's been implied between them for a long time. However, Shaitung makes Hitomi look like a well-developed, rounded character, while Nakamura gives me the impression that he wouldn't know what to do if I tied up Shaitung, hung her naked over his futon, and handed him a labelled diagram. > And we've had Chen/Akasha (someone described it to me as 'bad sex > without the sex') The horror! The horror! > And there's the Tsudao/Tanitsu thing that's been hinted at a couple > of times, and there's .. um ... That's the bland leading on the bland there... besides, everyone knows that Tsudao is destined for Paneki. :-) There's also Kenji and what's-his-face, in the Island of the Mist story, which is probably the only true romance-driven Friday fic (though I didn't particularly care for the way it was handled). Hints have been dropped about Reiha and Kuroda, too. But you've forgotten the big one, Rob... who can forget the immortal lines: "Brace yourself, samurai-boy," she purred. "This could get rough." and: "I'm looking for an Empress. Are you interested in the job?" "Allow me to present my qualifications..." The Wind of War gets my vote as the worst L5R fic EVER... and not just for the appalling Kaneka sex scenes. :-) > Oh - how could I forget - there's Hachi/Shahai ;) > What more do you want? Hot steaming scenes involving an oiled-up Kuon? Seconded! :-) Helen |

Somukeru means "to avert one's eyes". And yes, that's actually symbolic of their roles. > 2) Is Chokushi the guy and Somukeru the girl? That is > the gut feeling I am getting for gender here.
