When West Africans slaves were brought to the new world (Trinidad and Tobago and the rest of the Americas) they were not allowed to bring any aspects of their culture along with them. Their native language, clothing, life, music, and religion were changed by their respective European imperialists. In fact, the slaves were tortured, beaten, and forced to follow the Christian faith. One thing that the African descendants kept were their knowledge of life that were engraved in their minds. The most memorable aspect of life were their religion. All through the periods from the days of slavery to the 1960’s of British rule, our ancestors were ban from practicing their native religion. The slaves used to camouflage their practices by using catholic aspects with it called Baptism. From after our days of independence until today we are gradually removing the Christian aspects out of it because we should not be hiding our faith anymore. We are reviving our culture and uniting the nation together. May Shango’s blessings be onto you and your neighbors. |
