Individualized Reading Program |
Objectives 1. To help students select text that interests them. 2.To help students take responsibility for what they are reading. 3.To have students expand the knowledge of their own as well as their classmates while conducting literature circles on the books they read. |
Procedures for Selecting Books: When a student finishes a book in my class I will encourage them to write a catchy description of the book to grab students attention. It is important for students to know that if they begin reading a book they don't like, they can choose a different one. I will enlist the help of collegues and friends as well as my local librarian to help find books that will be of interest to my students. They can also take a look at my recommended reading list. |
A Letter to Parents This year we are starting an individualized reading program in our class. I am hoping this will allow students to become engaged in books that are of interest to them. I will be using this technique to supplement the required reading we have in class. Parents, I want to encourage you to help your students view reading as a relaxing and fun way to gain knowledge. Ask them about the book they chose, or recommend a book to them. If you have any old books lying around the house feel free to donate them to the class. During the reading process students will be encouraged to set goals for themselves so they will finish the book. They will also create questions they want answered by reading the text. At the end of the book they will have a small project due to show comprehension. If you have any questions please contact me. I am always looking for new ideas to engage the students in my classroom. Strategies for Getting Books: 1. Used book stores 2. Garage Sales 3. Class donations 4. Barnes and Noble (my favorite store) |
Book Questionnaire Title: Author: ISBN: Main Characters: Describe Characters Breifly: What do you hope to gain from the book? Genre of Book: Initial Questions after reading book description: Questions when halph way through the book: Were all of your questions answered? If not, which questions were left unanswered? When is your goal for finishing the book? How can I help in your understanding of the book? If you were a character in the book, who would you be? Can you relate to characters in the book? Would you change the ending of the book if you could? Would you recommend the book to a friend? |
Example Final Projects Skit: Take a favorite scene from the book, write a script for the scene. Practice the scene and present it to the class. Remember it must be atleast 20 minutes long. Be creative, use costumes and props where required. Sequel: Write a sequel to the novel you have just read. Many times I have read a book and wished it would not end so suddenly. Now is your chance to continue on with the book and write the next chapter. Literature Circle: Conduct your own literature circle where you can discuss the book. Tell your classmates your favorite character, part of book, or even why you disliked it. Make sure this educates your classmates and helps them decide whether or not they would want to read the same book. Your Choice: I am always up for new ideas on how to present your knowledge to the class. If you have a suggestion let me know and we can discuss the possibilities of it. |
