Amanda was the youngest child of James Carpenter and his wife Mahala Mays. She was married to William M. Nunley 24 Dec 1852 in Tishomingo Co. Ms. She had two brothers and two sisters. Her father was born in Amherst Co. Virginia around 1780. He married Mahala Mays in Amherst. Mahala's father was Charles Mays and her mother was a Cash. Amanda and her husband William had the following children: Caroline, Philadelphia, James W., Alabama, Mose Slaton, John Austin, Tobitha Belle, Tennesse S.,, Lee Roy, and Alexander Edward. Caroline married Thomas Dees, Philadelphia married a McVay, James William died at the age of 20 of Pneumonia, Alabama died around the age of 8 years old, John Austin married Clementine Murphy, Mose Slaton married Alice Allen, Lee Roy and his sister Tennessee S. never married, and Alexander Edward was married three times. A record found shows Amanda Carpenter Nunley was baptized 1887. Her father died 1840 and her mother 1848. Amanda had two brothers and two sisters, Leroy was born 1815,he married Matilda Farris in 1838. Eliza born 1818 and married Abner Moody in 1838., Nancy born 1820 and married Richard Thomason in 1835. John James born 1826 married Caroline Nunley in 1846. Amanda born 1835. She is in the 1850 census living with her sister Eliza and her husband Abner Moody and their 5 daughters. She is 15 years of age. This is in Tishomingo Co. Ms. She marries William M. Nunley December 1852. They built a log house in the Alsboro area of Colbert Co. Al. In this same area is where they are buried in the Carpenter/Nunley cemetery. In a obituary from the Vidette in Iuka, Amanda died sitting in her front yard at her home while talking to a son and daughter in 1894. |
