The year was 1753 when Angelus, along with a friend, stumbled onto the streets of Galloway, Ireland after being kicked out of a nearby tavern. When his friend passed out and fell to the ground, he left him there. It seemed like just one more night in an endless string of them-- a drunken haze, a pretty face... He was still human then. Something caught his eye-- or, rather, someone-- a woman, in a noblewoman's gown, standing at the mouth of an alley. When she started to move away, he followed without a thought, completely unaware of the danger that such beauty could possess. She tells him to close his eyes, and he does, not seeing when she vamps out. He does feel her bite, though, and his eyes fly open as he drops weakly to his knees in front of her. Darla smiles, and slices open a line above her breasts with her finger nail. She presses him against her, forcing him to drink the blood that drips from the wound, making him a vampire.
Little is known of the years between 1753 and 1898. Angelus ran with Darla, his sire, bringing mayhem and terror wherever he went. Even in 1997, The Master, Darla's sire, spoke of Angelus as "the most vicious creature [he] ever knew". What is known is that in 1860, Angelus met Drusilla. She was a pure, sweet, innocent girl, troubled with terrible visions, who became his obsession. He turned her into a vampire after murdering her family and driving her insane. The relationship between Angelus and Spike, aka "William the Bloody", is less clear. Angelus, the more experienced vampire, acted as a sort of teacher and mentor for Spike, showing him the ways of his new world. . For many years, Angelus, Spike, Darla, and Drusilla stayed more or less together-- one big, twisted "family." In 1898, in a wood in Romania, Angelus's un-life was changed forever. He made a mistake, feeding on the wrong girl, the most beloved daughter of the Kalderash gypsy clan. He would pay for his crime, this time. The clan's Elder woman, using an Orb of Thesulah, put a curse on Angelus. His soul was restored. It was meant for one purpose: to make him suffer. And he did. Angel was the only vampire on Earth with a conscious, with a soul. The memories of all those that he had killed and turned over the years haunted and tormented his every moment. Unable to stay in the company of those who felt no remorse for their killing, Angel fled to America, hoping, perhaps, to leave behind his past.
The next thing we know of Angel, it is 1996, in New York. He's a mess; filthy, living as a bum on the streets, catching rats for their blood and not caring for anything, or anyone. No purpose, no aim, no hope. It is at this time that a demon known as Whistler steps in, finding Angel in his sorry state. He gives him a chance to do something with his life, and takes him to L.A., to see the newly chosen Slayer: Buffy. Not long afterward, Buffy moves to Sunnydale, trying to get a fresh start after the destruction she caused in her last school. Angel follows, and, just before the night of the "Harvest," the time when The Master is supposed to rise, he reveils himself to her. He helps her, warns her, acting the cryptic, mysterious stranger. Things cannot stay this way much longer, however. Another ploy by the Master, involving powerful warrior vampires known as "The Three," leads Angel to getting injured while\\par trying to help Buffy, and she takes him back to her home. He spends the night there, in her bedroom, but as Buffy said the  next day to her friend Willow, he was a "perfect gentleman." Angel spends the day hidden in Buffy's closet, waiting out the sun, and when she finally does return, things start to change. \par Angel: I did a lot of thinking today I.. really can't be around you.Because when i am ..
Buffy: Hey, no big. Water over the bridge, under the bridge, over the dam
Angel: All I can think about is how badly I want to kiss you.
Buffy: Kiss me?
They do kiss, but, hungry, Angel is unable to stop his face from transforming when they do. She sees him, a vampire, and screams as he scrambles out her window. There is nothing so awful, however, that fate cannot fix. Eventually, slowly, Buffy and Angel see each other again. They realize that, despite their differences, and perhaps, in part, because of them, that being apart is worse than being together. Through thick and thin, they grow closer, until, one night, they make love for the first time. What neither of them knew was that this act would cost Angel his soul.
The curse that the gypsy Elder Woman placed on Angelus had one fatal flaw: a single moment of true happiness, and his soul would be taken away. Angel was meant to suffer for his crimes for all eternity, not live as human. Angel reverted back to Angelus, only this time, he had another obsession. Buffy had made him feel human, and as a soulless, consciousless killer once again, there was nothing he hated more. He stalks her, taunts her, terrorizes her. He kills Jenny Calendar, Buffy's friend and girlfriend of her Watcher, after learning that she was trying to translate the spell that would restore his soul. The lowest point came when a large stone obelisk was found buried underneath the newest section of Sunnydale. Inside: the demon Acathla. One breath from Acathla, and the entire world would be sucked into Hell. Drusilla wanted it, Angelus wanted it, and they got what they were after. They stole the obelisk from the museum it was housed in,  and opened it, but they could not wake the demon. They needed Giles, Buffy's Watcher, to tell them what they were doing wrong. The plan to suck the earth into Hell, however, never came to pass. The rituals were completed, Acathla was awakened, but  Buffy and Angel were engaged in a sword fight that Buffy would have won. Just before she was about to strike the last blow, a golden light flashed in Angel's eyes. Willow had found the spell that Miss Calendar was working on, and used it to restore his soul.  Acathla was already awake, and the only way to stop the end of the world was to send him to sleep again... to use Angel's blood... to send Angel to Hell. Time moves differently there. One day on earth might be a year, might be ten years, but there is no describing the horrors that Angel suffered. There had never been any records of anyone returning from Hell, ever. And yet, somehow, it happened. Angel fell from the sky, literally, to the floor of the mansion in the same spot that he had been sucked away. He was naked, in pain, and his mind was gone. Buffy found him, roaming the wooded areas of Sunnydale. He attacked her, but she managed to knock him out, and take him to the mansion where she chained him. He was little more than an animal-- a dangerous, violent animal-- and it seemed that he might stay that way. Love interviened once again. When Buffy was fighting what should have been just one more villian, a fellow classmate turned psycho, she was nearly killed, and it was Angel who turned up at the last minute, saving her. It was the thought and the memory of her that had brought him back. So Angel was back again, and, again, things started to grow between him and Buffy. There was much more this time, however, to overcome. They tried not seeing each other for a time, without success. That they could not be together completely was on both their minds, but it seemed like they would have tried, even with that in their way. When Sunnydale's Mayor, yet another villian, commented that love between them would never work, even then, they tried. It was Buffy's mother that did \\par it though. She came to Angel, telling him that Buffy had some hard decisions to make, and that she didn't think she could make them with him in her life. There was nothing else that Angel could do-- he left Sunnydale and Buffy behind, hoping for the best, trying to do what was right... for both their sakes.
