John Anster was born in Charleville, Co. Cork in 1793. He was educated at Trinity from which he obtained his BA in 1816. He converted from Catholicism to Church of Ireland. Admitted to the Bar in 1824, he eventually became Professor of Civil Law at Trinity. He was a frequent contributor to"Dublin University Magazine," "Blackwoods" as well as the "North British Review". His was the first translation of Goethe's "Faust" made by and Irishman. The present work was published in 1837 |
