AGRICULTURE.

Agriculture in Olgilai is primarily subsistence farming and livestock keeping. This is due to the fact that animals and plants are dependent to each other .The type of animals that are found in my village are cows, goats, sheep, pigs and chickens. Plants that are grown by the villagers are Coffee as a cash crop, Maize, Potatoes, Beans, Bananas and Tomatoes. These crops are grown in order to satisfy the villagers consumption. People practise small scale agriculture due to the shortage of land for cultivation, as a result of the natural landforms of the village . Hills and mountains are found in my village making the large part of the village to be found in higher elevations. This means that the application of machine tools in agriculture is very difficult, so farmers use hand tools like hand hoes. The villagers are harvesting few crops compared to the energy that was used in cultivation. Apart from these points mentioned, high population density causes the flat land to be used in the building of houses. In Olgilai people are cultivating up to the slope of hills.

Livestock keeping in our village tends to raise the peoples income. This type of activity is conducted during the whole year. You can find all the people in my village are keeping animals. Animals like cows, pigs, chicken and sheep are kept in order to make manure for farms, meat as food to the people and to sell in order to make money.
