VILLAGE LIFE

The lives of the people in Olgilai village are well defined . The villagers can be categorised in 2 ways, those trying to live a modern western style life and those leading a more traditional lifestyle .There are people who have modern houses and electricity, while others they have small houses which are traditionally made, they are roofed with banana leaves and built with traditional mud walls . Over time, the village is changing from traditional to modern building methods.

The type of food normally eaten by the villagers is prepared according to the crops that are harvested in the village during each season. Stewed bananas all year round, Maize from December to March, beef meat at any time , potatoes from July to September. Vegetable foods are most commonly eaten in our society. There is a Masai traditional food known as : Loshoro : this is the food made by mixing ground maize, unripe bananas and cows milk. This is like a porridge, it is cooked and then left in a pot for one day until it is ready to eat, it is eaten during the hot seasons and during the village congregations, for example births , weddings and funerals.

Also Masai people have their method of wearing clothes and special method of shaving . In our village usually women wear red khangas , a wrap around dress similar to a toga, which covers the whole body . Also the men traditionally wear garments known as rubeka which are similar to red khangas , they dress themselves in a very formalised ‘royal style’. They wear a type of traditional Masai sandals, called ‘Masendeu’, they carry a hooked staff called a ‘Bokora’ and a knife stuck into their belt, which is called ‘Olalem’. In Masai traditions there is the certain time for men to shave their heads . This is the type of celebrations where by a the elders of the tribe pass on the rituals of the clan . The shaving ceremony is a way of showing us that white hairs are more full of wisdom than normal hairs .

Our village is in a very wonderful location. We have small attractive waterfalls known as Napúru. This is the waterfall of the Themi river channel. The source of this river is mount Meru . Mount Meru is the highest volcanic mountain found in Arusha , it’s height are 3200m.This is the second highest mountain in Tanzania, the first highest mountain in my country is Kilimanjaro which is 5895meters high. This is the highest mountain in Africa . Mount Meru is well viewed in my village Olgilai. Napuru water falls are among the most attractive sites in my village Olgilai. There is also man made forestry and natural forestry known as the Meru Forest. There are pine trees, Cypruses, all types of Ecalyptus trees and Boabab trees. There are three hills in my village :Kivesi , Kiutu , and Endonyo hills .These are foothills of mount Meru.

In Olgilai there are also churches , but Christianity is the only religion found in my village . Churches that are available in the village are the Anglican church, Assembly of God, the Lutheran Church and the Pentecostal Churches. Also there is one government dispensary and one primary school calling Olgilai primary school. You can find there are many students in my village who like to continue with secondary classes they fail due to the expenses being so high . Those children who have completed primary school and are not selected to join government secondary schools receive no further academic education.
