Uncle Sam's Hat

What you will need
Measuring tape 4 9"x12" sheets white foam paper or posterboard Compass Scissors Thick, white tacky craft glue Ruler Pencil 1-inch paint brush Paper plate for paint palette Red and blue acrylic paints or permanent markers White star-shaped stickers or white acrylic paint

1. Measure the circumference of your child's head. Divide this number by 3 and draw a circle that many inches wide on the poster board. (For example, if your child's head measures 18 inches around, draw a 6-inch circle.) This will be the top of the hat.

2. Draw another circle, at least 1-3 inches wide, around the first. This will be the brim of the hat. Help your child cut out both circles, being careful not to damage the shapes.

3. To create the cylinder of the hat, glue the short edges of two sheets of foam paper together, overlapping them by 1/2 inch. This will create one sheet that is approximately 23 1/2 inches long. Let dry.

4. Set the foam down on a work space with the longer edges at the top and bottom and the shorter edges on the left and right. With a pencil, draw a horizontal line across the long side of the foam sheets, 2 inches from the edge. Then draw perpendicular lines, 1 1/2 inches apart, from the horizontal line to the bottom of the foam sheet. (Your child will paint these stripes later.)

5. Carefully roll the long sheet into a cylinder shape and slip the brim around it. Adjust the cylinder to fit the inside of the brim snugly, and mark where the ends overlap. Glue the cylinder shape at the marks. Let dry.

6. Glue the cylinder shape to the inside of brim with the horizontal pencil line at the bottom. Let dry. Glue the small circle to the top of the cylinder shape. Let dry.

7. Paint the 2-inch band around bottom of the cylinder shape with blue paint. Let dry. Paint alternating vertical stripes with red acrylic paint. Let dry. Apply star-shaped stickers or paint white stars on the blue area of the hat.
