OUR ANCESTRAL ROOTS |

"Heritage and tradition are the threads that link us to our past and guide is into the future, one generation to another." |

This has always been my firmly-held belief. As an adult, I look back fondly on the times I sat in Grandma Young's den in Indianapolis listening to her recount stories from her youth in Kentucky before television or refrigerators. She described the swinging bridge in Sherburne so aptly, I could empathize with her vertigo on those long-ago trips. |

I have actively researched my family's roots for the past 24 years, by taking notes and remembering oral traditions. The last few years have aided my search through the advent of the Internet.
It is my desire that this page will serve, not only as a milemarker in my own research, but as a testament to those who have come and gone before us. Without them, we would not be. |
Within this site, you will encounter my mother's ancestors: the SIMPSON's of Athens and Columbus, Ohio; and the COOK's of Rome and Cave Springs, Georgia. You will come to know my father's forebears: the YOUNG's, SMITH's, SAUNDERS', and GASKINS', of Nicholas, Bath, and Fleming Counties in Kentucky. |
There will also be information on my husband, Wadell's family: the CRUMPLER's, WOOTEN's, and HAMILTON's, of Georgia; and the BENNETT's, AKERS', and McCULLOUGH's of Alabama. |
I hope to also explore the missing links in our family tree: the SLOAN's of Ohio; the ROBERTS' of Georgia; and the AKERS' of Alabama. |
My fondest desire would be to establish contact with any living members in our family. |
This task is not a casual whim, but a lifelong quest that I embrace willingly, wholeheartedly, and lovingly. |
My family welcomes you!

My mother's paternal grandmother and grandfather. On the left, my great-grandmother Emma Lou Cook Roberts born about 1872 in Cave Spring, Georgia and died about 1949 in Columbus, Ohio. Emma was one of the 12 chidren of Samuel and Nancy English Cook. In the center, my great-grandfather Albert Roberts born possibly in Tennessee, date of death unknown. Ironically, the woman on the right, whose name is unknown (and who was my great-grandmother's best friend and lived down the road from the couple), carried on an affair with my great-grandfather, ultimately giving birth to a number of children. |

My maternal great-grandfather, Albert Roberts, who was a slave until the age of nine, and died in Cave Spring, Georgia. |

The caption on the reverse of this photo reads simply: R. D. Roberts I have not encounterered this name yet in my research, due to the data on my great-grandfather, Albert, being so sketchy. Because there appears to be a resemblance, this may be his brother. |
The name on the back of this photo is: Mrs. Annie D. Roberts Again, I have not encounterered this name yet in my research, short of the knowledge that this was one of my grandmother's pictures and her father was a Roberts. My guess, based upon her clothing, is that this photo was taken in the mid-1920's. That would rule her out as Albert's mother, due to her apparent youth. I would then surmise that she is a sister-in-law or young aunt. I would appreciate any feedback from family members. |
This photograph is labeled: Lou Roberts As is the case with the other pictures, I have very little to go on. In this case, I won't even fathom a guess. It would possibly be easier to make an assumption about the child, once we determine who LOU is. |

Cook Ancestors These are relatives on my mother's maternal side, from Cave Spring, Georgia. I do not know the name of the great-great aunt on the left. Nor do I know the name of the great-great uncle, but I do know who he is not. He is not Harry or Frank Cook. The woman on the right, however is my great-grandmother, Emma Cook Roberts My mother has the same eyes and brow area, and resembles her more as she gets older. |

More descendants of Samuel and Nancy English Cook One could only surmise, from this picture, that the siblings are gathered either for a family reunion, wedding, or funeral. I believe that my great-grandmother, Emma Cook Roberts is on the left, unless she had a sister that bore an uncanny resemblance to her. The others are Cook siblings. I would love to hear the opinions of other Cook relatives, as to who is who. |

My great-grandmother's niece: Fannie Lou Cook She was the daughter of Shepard Cook and his wife Pearl Barrett, and granddaughter of Samuel and Nancy English Cook. It appears here that she is pregnant, though I have no further biographical info on her. |
Another of my great-grandmother's brothers: Harry Cook He was the fourth child of Samuel and Nancy English Cook, of Cave Spring, Georgia. |
