Jack Cameron:
The Wolf Man from New Jersey

It was love at first sight. Their eyes locked, and he was so mesmerized he forgot all about the photos he wanted to take.

Jack Cameron vividly recalls his first encounter with a live wolf, one life-changing day at the Phoenix Zoo more than two decades ago. He was working in Arizona at the time and visiting the zoo on a day off when the resident pair of Mexican wolves cast a spell on him.

“I remember this like it was yesterday” says Jack. “One of the wolves stopped and stared right up at me like he was asking for my help.” It struck Jack that he just might be looking at the end of a species. “I knew that I could not let that happen.”

Ever since, he has toiled tirelessly to see that it doesn’t. “I have dedicated all of my free time to the continued restoration of the wolf and to educating people about wolves,” says Jack, who now makes his home in Somers Point, New Jersey, where he works for an environmental services firm.

On weekends, this long-time Defenders member travels throughout New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware with a wolf exhibit that features a fine stuffed wolf specimen and the latest materials from Defenders of Wildlife. Jack sets up shop at 15 different festivals and fairs, which are attended by a total of more 100,000 people a year. He figures he’s reached more than a million people with his displays over the years, gathered thousands of signatures on petitions and recruited countless new wolf supporters and Defenders members.
