Welcome to the Shiloh Prairie Farm website, we hope that you will take some time, look around and get to know us and our farm better. Besides me, my husband Jamey and our menagerie of pets and farm animals, Shiloh Prairie Farm's 80 acres of native prairie grass meadows and natural wooded land is home to lots of beautiful Kansas wildlife, including many large white tail deer, wild turkeys, bobcats, coyotes, lovely wild birds and raccoons just to name a few. |
In late 2001 we discovered the wonderful world of goats by accident. I was enjoying a peaceful afternoon sitting in my living room when I suddenly got a feeling I was being watched, but when I looked out the living room window I discovered my peeping tom was actually a cute, little pygmy goat looking back in at me with a funny little beard and a curious face. I managed to catch her with a little patience and a bit of horse grain. As it would turn out her name was Nanny and she was an experienced escape artist that belonged to our neighbor. It only took a few phone calls and a couple of days to find her owners but by then it was too late, I was already bitten by the goat bug It was not long after this that we brought our first two Boer goats home to Shiloh Prairie Farm and we have been raising them ever since. |
Our Boer Goats |
We keep a relatively small herd of about 20-30 Boer, Nubian and Boer cross goats depending on what time of year it is. By keeping our herd small we can concentrate on quality over quantity and ensure every goat gets the best of care. We raise and offer for sale percentage, purebred and a select few fullblood Boer goats for breeding stock as well as naturally raised meat wethers. We strive to breed healthy, productive goats that are also colorful. Our herd consists of paints, solid reds, blacks as well as traditional colored Boer goats. While we do love our colored Boers, herd health and productivity are our first concerns. Our goats are raised primarily on pasture, forage and free choice mineral and while we do feed grain as a supplement when needed, we do not believe in over-feeding of sacked feed to goats. |
We raise our own prairie hay which we use in inclement weather and we purchase quality alfalfa hay when needed. We vaccinate with CD/T & the pasteurella pneumonia vaccine. To protect our goats from coyotes and other predators we use Great Pyrenees livestock guardian dogs, and do have puppies for sale on rare occasions. |
Visitors Always Welcome |
We welcome visitors and encourage those interested in goats to come by and see our herd and ask questions. We are always glad to "talk goats" with people, though we do ask that you please call ahead of time to be sure we will be home. |
