"We began as a group of friends eager to listen to, reflect, and deepen our appreciation of the DHARMA. As the teachings sink deeply into each of our lives, the appreciation of who we are--humans with all of the foibles and limitations of being shrouded in our own egoistic views as shown to us. And yet, this gift of life sustains us. Shin Buddhism is not for me to say, "It'll be good for someone else." Instead, I say, "It is MY only path. Namu Amida Butsu." How fortunate we are to have our SANGHA!" -- Alice Unno, January 2002

Mission Statement of the NSBS

The Mission of the Northampton Shin Buddhist Sangha is to cultivate the study, practice and advancement of the teachings of our founder Shinran Shonin. The Sangha will share these Pure Land teachings with anyone interested in this aspect of Buddhism. We shall seek to embody the Dharma in our everyday lives, guided by the Wisdom and Compassion of Amida Buddha.

We are a small group of Buddhists, of diverse backgrounds and training, who come together regularly to share services and discussion. Our activities include regular gatherings for services and Dharma discussion, Family Dharma for children & parents & friends, special topic workshops, and annual weekend retreats. We formerly offered reading groups and a lay teacher program, and look forward to new projects in the near future.

We meet under the guidance of Sensei Taitetsu Unno. Our sangha is based on the Jodo Shinshu tradition. Shin Buddhism is a path primarily for lay people, arising from the teachings of Shinran (1173 - 1263), and affirming the boundless compassion -- infinite light and infinite life -- in the heart of every imperfect, confused human being. In our tradition, enlightenment arises not from teachers or doctrines, but from the deepest levels of human experience.

The Northampton Shin Buddhist Sangha is a non-profit organization. As of June 3, 2006, we are affiliated with the Buddhist Churches of America (BCA).

If you would like an introduction to Shin and the Pure Land tradition, especially suited for modern readers, we recommend Sensei Unno's River of Fire, River of Water and Shin Buddhism: Bits of Rubble Turn Into Gold.
