Wufei couldn't do anything but stare at the paper in his hands. He understood the meaning of the words, but he could not accept them. His heart twisted, and he looked down at it again.
Dear Wufei,
You will never see me again. I'd like to tell you I was going to a better place, but I've never been one to lie.
When the war ended, last week, I realized things I had never known before. I realized how precious, yet how meaningless a life can be.
A soul is like a candle, glowing so brightly. And some days the wind makes the light flicker, and one day the candle is extinguished when it becomes too much.
And life is a drug I am no longer addicted to. Sometimes, it was all too much, yet it was never enough. The days would inevitably come when I thought of my own past, and thought of yours and the other pilots as well. This killing always had a way to be justified, in some form or another…but sometimes, you just run out of people to kill, or your cause becomes worthless.
And maybe I'm just a fool, as I acted so many times, and maybe if I had held you, it would have been alright, and maybe I'm just crazy.
You and the other pilots were the wind beneath my wings, yet like Icarus and Daedulus, I flew too high. I always stretched to reach the stars, and when I finally reached them, I realized they were nothing. There was no magic, and it was not worth the struggle when I finally reached the end. Just another dying dream, crashing to earth like a broken-winged angel.
There have been too many. Too many deaths because of me, because of my idiocy, because of my love. The Maxwell church, Solo, everyone. They were all killed because of me, because of knowing me, because I loved them. I'm sorry I couldn't be there for them…I'm sorry I can't be there for you. I'm not strong enough. I gave all I had freely, and I have nothing left.
Know that I do this for your life, not mine. For I love you. You don't deserve to die.

And Wufei cried as his heart broke.
And somewhere in a clearing in the midst of a forest, a shot rang out and the grass was painted red, and one more life slid away unnoticed by the world, which moved on without pausing.
And back in the safe house, one last tear fell from a deep velvet eye as a small, empty orange bottle clattered to the ground, dropping from lax fingers, and another life slid away unnoticed.
And the world went on, and the world didn't care.
