Grand Canyon National Park
Mystery of the LOST Trilobite Exhibits - Part 2
Built by the C.C.C. at Indian Gardens, May 1936

HAS ANYONE SEEN THESE EXHIBITS RECENTLY ?

From a report by Vincent W. Vandiver 1936, National Park Service Regional Geologist

Trilobite Quarry Number Two

A view of the second quarry which was opened up and which was eventually prepared for a trailside exhibit. The overburden was removed and this was followed by the slow work of chipping in the Bright Angel Shales to develop fossils in situ for this exhibit.

Vandiver, chipping in the same quarry and endeavoring to uncover additional fossils and round out some of the fossils already found. Rather hard sandstone beds occur at frequent intervals in the Bright Angel Shales and progress was quite slow when we got down to chipping each small fragment of rock, endeavoring to bring out as many fossils as possible in place.

C.C.C. enrollees constructing a concrete masonry wall around the Trilobite exhibit prior to the placing of the 36" x 48" plate glass frame over the same.

They're also placing cement on the masonry base to form a level base for the glass frame cover. The dry rock wall at right was installed on the slope above the exhibit as a means of protection to catch or divert rolling boulders.

Looking down on the exhibit after the completion of the wall. It will be observed that many specimens of Trilobites have been carved out in situ, which should convince the most skeptical as to the presence of fossils in these Cambrian rocks. In addition to these forms, small brachiopods and worm trails may be seen in this exhibit.

It was decided to attempt to locate a third quarry closer to Indian Gardens because an exhibit nearer to the Gardens would more advantageously positioned for the visitors going along the Bright Angel Trail.

A "new" species of Trilobite found at Quarry No. 3
