(Aka What is a Shipper? What is a Noromo? What is...?)

Basically what the title says, this page is for all those relatively new to the web and the Internet slang words that come easily to those of us who have been surfing the web for sometime. Well, I've only been online for one and a half years so I don't know them all. What's below are the terms associated with Shipperworld and other Internet abbrieviations you might come across on a mailing list or newsgroups or chat room.

Shipper

Also used are the terms ‘shipperdome’, ‘shippy’, ‘shippery’, ‘shipperworld’

‘Shipper’ is a term derived from the English word ‘relationship’, as opposed to being derived from the word ‘worship’ as has been suggested by some Noromos (see below for definition).

A shipper is someone who is in favour of a relationship between two lead characters on a TV program or book/film. ‘Shipper’ is used when someone is in favour of a male/female romantic relationship. (There are also the 'shippers of the same gender-relationships but - for now - that doesn't concern Shipperworld. The only main difference is that their fanfiction is a different category to male/female romance fanfiction - it's called 'slash fiction' because of the '/' used when listing the characters involved.)

By definition, a shipper is someone who believes that such a romantic relationship should/would/could occur between said characters if possible.

Shippers are a group of people who can see the romantic side of a relationship portrayed in a TV show/novel/film/whatever that they are fans of. Most of the time, we shippers are harmless, though Noromo’s should watch where they step when there’s a groups of us together…. Just kidding!! Maybe...

Fencer:

‘Fini(s)-shippers’ or ‘Fencers’ are those who have some shipper tendencies and share some shipper beliefs but who are unable to fully commit to one side of the fence only – be it the side of shippers or Noromo’s.

Shippers and fencers get along, most of the time. The only instance I’ve personally heard something about a shipper and a fencer clashing in a friendly discussion was when the fencer was leaning heavily onto the Noromo side and wasn’t willing to listen to all of the shipper’s reasoning. Other than that, shippers and fencers are a peaceful bunch when together.

Noromo

‘Noromo’ – as in ‘No romance’ or ‘Non-romantic’. If reversed with the last ‘o’ taken off, it spells ‘Moron’ which is, in some cases, quite apt. (Notice the some - Not all 'Noromos' are like that!) Noroomos are generally seen to be the rivals of Shippers, which I guess they are.

‘Noromo’s’ are those who (no surprise) are completely opposed to a romantic relationship developing between the two lead characters. There are mixed Noromo’s, some of whom admit there is a slight possibility but who aren’t in favour and others who are blind to what’s right in front of them. Ahem, sorry, I’m not being very objective, am I?

Anyway, Most Noromo’s leave the shippers to their own devices but some, unfortunately, like causing trouble. These such Noromos are the ones Shippers are wary of and are opposed to. They don’t respect our opinions and like saying how pathetic we are and how we wouldn’t like the TV shows etc. without the shippy aspect which, in my humble opinion (IMHO), is absolute…ahem…nonsense.
