The Society for Creative Anachronism is an organization dedicated to reliving the Middle Ages (roughly 600 to 1600).  Each participant invents a "persona", i.e., a character that they portray at events.
This character should be someone who could have existed in period, but didn't happen to.  You can choose a persona based a culture you are interested in, aspects of medieval craft you like, etc.  We have personae from Vikings to Turks To Elizabethans in this society.

At events, everyone should make an attempt at pre-17th century clothing.  We do not have minimum standards for what that clothing should be; what this means is that you can start off "good enough for now" and gradually get better as your knowledge, skills, availability of materials, and understanding of your persona's time and place increase.  After all, as Shakespreare said (in A Midsummer Night's Dream), "The best in this kind are but shadows; The worst are no worse, if imagination amend them."
