What is Linux ? Linux is a Unix clone written from scratch by Linus Torvalds with assistance from a loosely-knit team of hackers across the Net. It aims towards POSIX compliance. It has all the features you would expect in a modern fully-fledged Unix, including true multitasking, virtual memory, shared libraries, demand loading, shared copy-on-write executables, and more... Linux is an open source operating system. Open source means it is developed by non profit making organizations and individuals all over the world. They collaborate and share their work. Anybody can view others work and modify it. After modification he must in-turn open it for every body. By this way great bug-fixing and development of Linux has occurred in past years. It is a modern OS with many features that are superior to windows. Another plus point is that it is completely free. You can buy a Jewel Box distribution at a nominal price or get a complete box-packaged of-the-self distribution complete with manuals, tech support and much more software. The LSB project (Linux Standard Base) ensures compatibility among different versions. There is also standard Internationalization effort (i18n) through Free Standard Group. They have come up with OpenI18n Standard .

If you choose Linux as a Server you can save thousands of dollars. As its roots are in Unix, Linux has built-in support for File, Print, Application and Terminal Server. The money saved is better spend on extra hardware. As a server (in latest kernel 2.6.x series) it supports up to 64 GB of RAM and 8 Way SMP systems, up to 16 Ethernet cards, 10 IDE controllers, multiple IO-APICs. It can access terabytes of file system/storage, can now handle an amazing number of users and groups - about 4.2 billion of users. Full 64-bit support is now available for Intel Itanium-2(IA-64) CPU . SuSE as usual has an excellent Linux Server based on it. Another chip giant AMD has an interesting solution. It is called Opteron Processor. With it you can run both 32 bit and 64 bit applications on a single platform. So you can migrate to 64 bit with your own pace. SuSE also has an excellent optimized Linux Server solution on AMD Opteron. Beowulf Clustering is there for supercomputer class performance - which combines several Servers together. Linux is a pre-emptive multitasking, multithreaded and GUI based networked operating system. As its heritage in Unix, it has built-in client-server architecture with full TCP/IP support. The X-Windows system helps running GUI based apps remotely on a client machine (even if the machine is half way around the world !). Most network hardware are smoothly supported ( Like LAN Ethernet cards, Hubs, etc). The 2.6.x kernel series has more server features.

1. There is now support for Automatic Graphical Install with Bootable CD. Linux now supports AutoRun, and AutoMount of CD. The installer and the configuration tools completely (or partially) support 60 different languages, from Afrikans to Wallon.

2. Automatic Partition during installation. NTFS and FAT32 Partition Resizing can be done safely during installation. Partition can be manipulated safely after also. It can now peacefully co-exist with windows in same partition booting from inside windows (acting just like a windows program). Linux4Win from MnandrakeSoft is one such program.

3. GUI Boot Manager (like GRUB, LILO), supporting smooth multi-boot. Graphical Booting Process.

4. GUI Based Centralized Control Panel, On-The-Fly Hardware Recognition, Online Updating.

5. Modern standard support like - USB 2.0 support Firewire support, CUPS - a new improved printing system . The Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) is the standard printing system for Linux which offers great printing rendering. CUPS now supports more printers than ever in Linux - over 1000! . In addition to the impressive number of supported printers and extended configuration options, CUPS is extremely easy to configure and allows any networked machines to access printers on a CUPS server over the local network without any configuration. Linux now offers one of the best print rendering solutions currently available.

LVM - (Logical Volume Manager) which allows you to modify partitions on a running system. Win-Modems (drivers for Win-modems such as Conexant and Alcatel Speedtouch USB are available ), and many new advanced hardware are supported now. RPM ensures smooth installations, and up gradation of Packages - K Package Manager gives a GUI based front-end for this. ACPI support for better power management with laptops. Hot-plug support allows you to plug in new hardware and have it automatically recognized and configured while the system is running. Support for a number of WiFi devices. Optimized drivers for NVIDIA , and Radeon - based video cards . Plug in a USB scanner or and a corresponding icon appears automatically on the desktop. Another advanced feature is supermount which lets users access removable media (CD-ROM, floppy, Zip, etc.) instantaneously and transparently without having to use the traditional mount/umount commands. Supermount has been greatly improved with a focus on performance and stability.

16. Personal Information Manager : Kontact from KDE is a Personal Information Management suite that can be used as client for different groupware servers. It provides an email client, calendaring, Scheduling features like shared email folders, group task lists, calendar sharing, central addressbooks and meeting scheduling. Another one is Evolution which provides integrated mail, addressbook and calendaring functionality to users of the GNOME desktop

17. Home Accounting Software : Qhacc , GNUCASH - GNUcash enables a flexible configuration and operation. Instead of going to the bank, you can manage your bank account online with your computer. Other functions include the management of income and expenditures, the administration of securities accounts, and accounting tasks for small enterprises, support for the Open Financial Exchange (OFX) protocol , Import and use of Quicken files, Can be used around the globe. The Home Banking Computer Information (HBCI) protocol is an online banking protocol that implements a high level of security and other advantages. GNUcash supports this security standard and delivers many other functionalities. Kapital is also an excellent program from KDE.

Skype is very much available for Linux. Skype is a little piece of software that lets you make free calls to anyone else on Skype, anywhere in the world. And even though the calls are free, they are really excellent quality. If you and your friends, family or business contacts are using webcams, you can also make free video calls. You can even call landlines and mobile phones at really cheap per minute rates (and there's no setup or subscription fee).

Firstly, OpenSuSE is the best choice for Linux. Both Desktop and Server. Although some of you may be interested at commercial Linux(based on SuSE) Server from Novell. You can for yourself what features are available for SuSE's Enterprise Server !

Secondly for commercial Home Desktop a good choice is... Mandriva Linux PowerPack ( Formerly Mandrake Linux ). Mandriva Linux PowerPack is one of the best Desktop Linux. It now includes TransGaming's Cedega which lets you play hot Windows games, InterVideo LinDVD- allowing you to play your DVD movies legally right out of the box, Kaspersky anti-virus solution, New 3D desktop support and drak3D configuration tool, RPMDrake2 - combined installation / removal interface, and BitDefender - anti spam/worm/hacking/trojan/malicious code solution.

Now the third option, Ubuntu is the latest craze in Linux Distribution. It is both high quality and completely FREE. Many belives that Ubuntu is fast becoming king of Linux distros. Ubuntu is suitable for both desktop and server use. The current Ubuntu release supports PC (Intel x86), 64-bit PC (AMD64), UltraSPARC T1 (Sun Fire T1000 and T2000) and PowerPC (Apple iBook and Powerbook, G4 and G5) architectures. The fourth one is Fedora Project from Red Hat. A very solid, mature, stable, and technically perfect Linux Distribution. It showcases the latest in free and open source software.

A new direction in Linux in distribution is coming up. It is called United Linux. Where many companies (including SuSE, IBM, TurboLinux, Borland, AMD, SAP, NEC, HP, Fujitsu, CA, Connectiva, etc) are joining a united effort to develop an open Linux OS, which will be completely standardized across the spectrum. They have already released the first version. A very interesting distribution is Knoppix . It totally runs from a bootable CD with hardware auto detection and configuration. It does not touch your hard disk, so very safe. Very good for demo purpose. I personally often use it. Believe me it is great fun !

Personally, I am a fan of SuSE. They are the greatest Linux distribution around. They have huge experience and quality product. Many times they are judged as best Linux distribution in many reviews and shootouts ( read here ). Recently SuSE is bought by Novell . They are now integrating their products into it. Very recently SuSE has opened its door to open-source community by making SuSE completely free ! yes, you read that right ! Completely free ! More Over the open-source community is in charge of its development now. Please visit the OpenSuSE Project now for complete details.
