Linux ? Linux is a Unix clone written from scratch by Linus Torvalds with assistance from a loosely-knit team of hackers across the Net. It aims towards POSIX compliance. It has all the features you would expect in a modern fully-fledged Unix, including true multitasking, virtual memory, shared libraries, demand loading, shared copy-on-write executables, and more... Linux is an open source operating system. Open source means it is developed by non profit making organizations and individuals all over the world. They collaborate and share their work. Anybody can view others work and modify it. After modification he must in-turn open it for every body. By this way great bug-fixing and development of Linux has occurred in past years. It is a modern OS with many features that are superior to windows. Another plus point is that it is completely free. You can buy a Jewel Box distribution at a nominal price or get a complete box-packaged of-the-self distribution complete with manuals, tech support and much more software. The LSB project (Linux Standard Base) ensures compatibility among different versions. There is also standard Internationalization effort (i18n) through Free Standard Group. They have come up with OpenI18n Standard .Linux is made up of following Parts/components -
1. A Linux Kernel - The heart/brain of OS. Now in Version 2.6.23 ( the 2.6.23 version includes new features like HostAP, FUSE, the linux port of the plan9's 9P protocol, netlink connector, relayfs, securityfs, centrino's wireless drivers, support for DCCP, PPTP, full 4 page-table support for ppc64, numa-aware slab allocator, lock-free descriptor lookup and many other things ) . Please take a look of the new enhanced features of kernel 2.6.x series at here !
2. X11R7 - The free X-Windows GUI system.
3. KDE - K Desktop Environment. The GUI operating environment for Linux ( Gnome with Bonobo Component Architecture, and SawFish Window Manager is a great rival.). Many interesting themes are available for both KDE, and Gnome, they can completely change the look and feel of Desktop, and mimics Windows XP, or Mac OS X. Switchdesk - K Desktop Switcher lets you switch between KDE, and Gnome on the fly. XPde aims to recreate the Windows XP desktop environment on Linux in order to allow Windows users to "feel at home" in front of a Linux computer.
4. Qt - The widget library of programming objects - pre built C++ components. It is cross platform , means you can simultaneously develop your application on Linux, Mac, and Windows. KDE and many other applications are based on it. Many considered it as the most important piece of Linux programming today. GTK+ for gnome is a rival.
5. gcc - The GNU C++ and other compiler ( GCC features C, C++, Fortran 77, Objective C, Java and Ada 95 compilers) collection
6. glibc - The GNU C++ library .
7. ALSA - ALSA - Advanced Linux Sound Architecture.
8. You will also get lots of free software depending on your choosing Linux as a Server, or Desktop. These are listed below...
If you choose Linux as a
Server you can save thousands of dollars. As its roots are in Unix, Linux has built-in support for File, Print, Application and Terminal Server. The money saved is better spend on extra hardware. As a server (in latest kernel 2.6.x series) it supports up to 64 GB of RAM and 8 Way SMP systems, up to 16 Ethernet cards, 10 IDE controllers, multiple IO-APICs. It can access terabytes of file system/storage, can now handle an amazing number of users and groups - about 4.2 billion of users. Full 64-bit support is now available for Intel Itanium-2(IA-64) CPU . SuSE as usual has an excellent Linux Server based on it. Another chip giant AMD has an interesting solution. It is called Opteron Processor. With it you can run both 32 bit and 64 bit applications on a single platform. So you can migrate to 64 bit with your own pace. SuSE also has an excellent optimized Linux Server solution on AMD Opteron. Beowulf Clustering is there for supercomputer class performance - which combines several Servers together. Linux is a pre-emptive multitasking, multithreaded and GUI based networked operating system. As its heritage in Unix, it has built-in client-server architecture with full TCP/IP support. The X-Windows system helps running GUI based apps remotely on a client machine (even if the machine is half way around the world !). Most network hardware are smoothly supported ( Like LAN Ethernet cards, Hubs, etc). The 2.6.x kernel series has more server features.The main benefits of choosing Linux as a Server are listed below......

Cedega allows Windows-based games to run on Linux, out-of-the-box, seamlessly and transparently. With Cedega, TransGaming does not require any access to a game's source code but, rather, runs the Windows executable on Linux. In simplified terms, Cedega loads a game's binary into memory on a Linux system and then dynamically links to code that provides an implementation of the Win32 APIs that the program is using. The APIs that Windows games are mostly built on top of are primarily based on Microsoft's DirectX system. These APIs include facilities for handling 3D graphics (Direct3D), mouse and keyboard input (DirectInput), audio (DirectSound), and so on. TransGaming works to create Linux compatible versions of these APIs that work on top of the Linux equivalents such as OpenGL, X11, and the OSS and ALSA sound APIs. An important attribute of Cedega is the complete support for third party engines and SDKs such as Bink, Lithtech, Miles, Havok, Renderware, etc. Cedega is the culmination of several years of effort on these API and our engineering team's knowledge of DirectX is probably second only to Microsoft's own.

A new direction in Linux in distribution is coming up. It is called United Linux. Where many companies (including SuSE, IBM, TurboLinux, Borland, AMD, SAP, NEC, HP, Fujitsu, CA, Connectiva, etc) are joining a united effort to develop an open Linux OS, which will be completely standardized across the spectrum. They have already released the first version. A very interesting distribution is Knoppix . It totally runs from a bootable CD with hardware auto detection and configuration. It does not touch your hard disk, so very safe. Very good for demo purpose. I personally often use it. Believe me it is great fun !
A new front for Linux in embedded devices, and, systems is opening now. It is called Embedix . Please visit this link for more info. is a great Real-time and Embedded Linux Distribution. It gives you the feel of a completely Real Time OS.
Personally, I am a fan of SuSE. They are the greatest Linux distribution around. They have huge experience and quality product. Many times they are judged as best Linux distribution in many reviews and shootouts ( read here ). Recently SuSE is bought by Novell . They are now integrating their products into it. Very recently SuSE has opened its door to open-source community by making SuSE completely free ! yes, you read that right ! Completely free ! More Over the open-source community is in charge of its development now. Please visit the OpenSuSE Project now for complete details. Here is a nice article on how to make the OpenSuSE 10.3 a supercharged distro with enhancements ( When you're done installing OpenSUSE 10.3, your desktop system is not complete. You still need support for Java programs, MP3 audio files, and browser plugins for Macromedia Flash, Adobe Acrobat, RealPlayer, Windows Media Video, encrypted DVD playback etc. The article above shows how to effectively make the open source version of OpenSUSE 10.3 a complete distro ).
