| As a leader, your best resources are sometimes right at your fingertips. Try-it books, Badge books, Council patches and things all of you know about. But did you know there are so many more out there that you can work on? Of course all leaders are encouraged to allow the girls to work on patches outside a troop setting to bring back to the troop to share what they have learned. This firstly gets the girls involved in what they like but when they share with others in the troop, those girls might say, "Hey that was cool, I want to learn more about that too." But what about that girl in your troop who is a nature lover, a soccer player, or loves forensics? Does your troop love hiking, Do you encourage her to learn more or do you limit her to what's in your books? Of course, you encourage her but didn't know how and where to get info from. There are councils all over the country who have developed Councils Owns patches that they share. Whats a Councils Own you ask? It is a program developed at Council levels, sometimes by troops and sometimes by the council. They cover special interests such as Butterflies, Fishing, Caving, Disability awareness and much more. Other Councils Owns are a great resource. Just be sure: 1. You contact the council to be sure that they do Share their Program 2. You order the Patches ASAP you may be interested in (As the councils are merging and you may not be able to get the patch if it takes the girls a while to earn it) |
