Who am I? What am I? Questions that I have been asking myself ever since I was old enough to comprehend my situation. I have a foot in two conflicting worlds and yet do not belong in either. I am not a human but I am not a vampire. So what am I? ~~~ A small-framed girls body hit the sidewalk outside ‘Willies Place’ with a thud. The male vampire who had ejected her from the establishment towered over her with a combination of humor and disgust written on his protruding, vampiric features. The body on ground curled up to try and stop the searing pain from the burses and cuts she has suffered from getting in, but it did not work. To make sure the girl knew the full extent of her trespass, the large vampire kicked her roughly in the ribs, satisfied at the sound of hearing several of them crack from the impact of his foot on her chest. “You filthy little half bread, stay away from here and from us, you don’t belong in our world, not while you still carry that disgusting soul.” “I’ll keep that in mind”, the girl spluttered out as her attacker returned in to the small demonic bar. She couldn’t move, her whole body was so ridged with pain, all she could do was lie there and watch the blood from the lacerations on her head mix with the gentile drops of rain, which, had just began to fall, pour in to the gutter. She closed her eyes and wished for her own death, but according to the vampires she had just met, that end was even too good for a creature such as herself. She passed out through the loss of blood and the intense pain, it was not the first time she had been beaten, no, not at all the first, but this would have to rank as one of the worst. It was strange considering that this little Californian town was meant to explain all of what the girl had been through and give all her suffering some meaning. Not quite the start she had hoped for. The next thing she encountered was not what she was hoping for, another vampire, she moaned that she had had enough and understood where she stood and asked if he could just leave her be. “Bloody hell”, the vampire swore as he saw the state of the girl lying in the gutter. He picked her up as carefully as he could, still listening to her objections and moans of pain and dismay. He then looked at her face, which was bloodied and bruised and wincing in pain. He quieted her and reassured her that he had no intentions of hurting her, believing she was human. Skeptical of his motive she obeyed but only to fall, again, unconscious. The circumstances in which he found her puzzled him as he made his way toward the magick shop, where he was sure there would be someone who would know how to handle this situation. Willies Place was a well know haunt for vampires and other nasties, and a bleeding helpless girl lying outside a place like that should not have stayed alive for as long and it appeared that she had been lying there. The vampire reached the still lit Magick Shop and knocked on the door. It was opened by a small female who called him by name. “S-spike what are you doi--?” “What does it look like?” Spike replied cutting her off and gesturing to the girl he held cradled in his arms. Spike pushed passed the slayer and headed quickly and directly for the main table toward the back of the shop. With one motion, amidst the objections from Willow, Tara, Xander and Anya, Spike swept away the pile of books and other items on the table to make room for the body he still hugged close to his chest. He lay the girl down gently while calling for Giles to be in attendance. He popped his head out from the training room to see what the commotion was about and to tell the causes of commotion to take it outside. Upon recognition that this was not just another pre marital tiff between Xander and Anya, he hurried out of the back room to see if what exactly was going on. “Watcher, I found her outside Willies, I don’t think she is human and well she’s breathing so she isn’t a vampire. I didn’t think the hospital could handle it if she wasn’t human, so I brought her to you” Spike spluttered in a bit of a flap. “You did the right thing, she looks harmless and badly hurt”, Giles replied reassuring Spike that he was right bringing the girl there. During the commotion Buffy had moved to the back of the group and muttered, “Yeh and Glory looked harmless to the naked eye too, but as I dimly recall she killed me”. “B-buffy I think this is a slightly different situation, for a start this girl in the state she is, probably could not open her eyes much less start an inter-dimensional war”, Giles reassured continuing to examine the girl unconscious body. “W-well its her eye lids… they look shify”, she continued. “For the love of God, all of you, if all you are going to do is gork and get in my way I suggest you leave, and Willow take Buffy with you, I think we have all had more than enough excitement for today”, they all began to leave, respecting Giles’s request, “not you Spike, I need you to stay, maybe you could shed some light on who this girl is, and possibly what she is”. “I found her like that, I haven’t seen her before, but if you need me to stay I will, my crypt has developed a leak in the roof right over my bed, its both clean and dry in her, the Hilton compared to my place”. “Good thank you”, Giles said as the others left, “truth be known, I don’t think Buffy is up to an more excitement, especially given the revelations of the night, and if this girl isn’t human and in fact dangerous, I would prefer having someone around who has seen more action and polishing glasses and consulting books”. “Yeh, I guess, I found the circumstances in which I found her a little odd.” “Go on”, Giles urged still examining the girl. “Well, its just… I found her outside Willies, on a Friday night, where every creature from the dark side of the tracks would be there, and she was right outside, helpless, lying there, easy pickings for anything. But nothing was picking or showing any interest whatsoever. It was just odd is all, I am probably reading to much in to it”. “M-maybe, but maybe not. That is odd behaviour; your concerns are not unfounded. And I think I can confirm your fears, I don’t believe she is human”, Giles stated taking a step back and frowning. “Oh yeh, what makes you think that?” Spike questioned looking at the girl. “She is healing, at a very fast pace, faster even, than I have seen Buffy heal. It appears to be much like the healing that a vam--” “A vampire exhibits?” The girl said her eyes still tightly closed. “Well, umm, yes”, Giles uttered taking another step back from the frail figure. “My healing is exactly like that of a vampires, because it is that of a vampires”, she continued, her eyes flickering open, again wincing in pain. “Ah luv, not that I don’t believe you, but…. I don’t believe you. Your heart was beating when I picked you up”, Spike said objecting to her comments, but moving a step closer. “Ha-ha, I never said that I *was* a vampire, I said that I possessed their healing abilities”, she replied a little amused. “So- so you are human, with advanced healing? A new slayer perhaps?” Giles enquired. “Oh yes that would be simple wouldn’t it. A slayer. Sadly though, no, I am neither a human nor am I a slayer, to be honest I don’t know exactly what I am. However in most circles I am classified as a ‘half breed’. Half vampire, half human. And hated by both”, She said closing her eyes once more. Spike dropped the cigarette he had just liberated from his crumpled pack, “That’s why the Vampires at Willies weren’t touching you”. The girl laughed almost hysterically, until the pain from her cracked ribs prevented it “Weren’t touching me? Who the hell do you think did this to me? The tooth fairy? Cause even though I have heard she is one bad bitch, I don’t think she could have done this much damage.” “E-excuse me, ah, a half breed? I don’t believe I have ever heard of one”, Giles said a little confused. “I am not surprised, there are very few of us, more now days that birthing procedures have improved and such but still we are not exactly taking over the world, I don’t think there are even enough of us to take over a Donut King. Plus even if we are born, as soon as its discovered that we are not normal we are hunted, either by humans or the other vampires, take you pick really, both are as brutal as each other, vampires are just more vocal about it”. “I-I see”, Giles stuttered beginning to flip through one of the watchers diaries, trying to find some mention of half-breeds and how they are created. “I would really love to continue to chat about what a curse I am, and how I have wrecked everyone who has ever gotten close to me s live. However, my pummelling has taken quite a bit out of me and if you wouldn’t mind I must take my leave and find somewhere I can stay”, the girl said trying to sit up right, unsuccessfully so. “Ah luv, I can pretty safely say that you are going no where, you may have my healing abilities but not even a vampire can recover that quickly from the injuries you suffered”, Spike said gently pushing her back down. “I concur with Spike, you are obviously in no condition to leave, and the opinion I get is that even if you were well enough, finding somewhere safe to stay maybe easier said than done”, supported Giles. “Are you saying I am safe here? You barely know me?” “That’s true, but I venture to say you are safer in here than you would be out there. Plus we can offer you somewhere dark come day break”, Giles continued. “That’s really not necessary, I do not bust in to flames, I sunburn easily, very easily, but flames are not an issue. I think that’s the human in me”. Spike picked her up and began to walk in to the back room, who’s windows were blocked from the harmful rays of the sun. “The sun may not effect you luv, but I am not so fortunate. Watcher, its too late for me to go back to my crypt, I will stay here and watch her”, Spike said continuing toward the back room to avoid the already rising sun. “Excuse me. Do *I* get a say in this?” The girl said struggling to free herself from Spikes arms. “No”, Spike said simply as her placed her down on the blue training mat, then folded his duster up and placed it under her head. “Why are you doing this”, the girl asked. “Because” he said sitting in a chair near her. “Look you should get some sleep while you can, come working hours and you wont be so lucky”. With that, Spike took out a cigarette and lit it, and watched as the girl began to drift of to sleep. |
