These lizards are found only in a very small area of southern California and the Baja peninsula. They live on huge boulders in narrow canyons. This lizard was photographed at Borrego Palm Canyon in Anza-borrego Desert State Park. They are very wary and do not allow close approach. They climb on vertical and underneath rock surfaces as quick and easily as they do on horizontal surfaces. The pattern of mottled bands and spots blends in perfectly with the granite boulders. They eat insects, spiders, and flower buds and blossoms. |
