These are large, heavy bodied lizards. Their range closely parallels that of the creosote bush, their main food. They live among large rock outcroppings where they can take refuge in crevices if disturbed. The chuckwalla will crawl into a rock crevice and gulp air to inflate its body and firmly wedge itself in the crevice. They are almost impossible to remove once wedged into the rocks. This lizard was photographed at the bottom of the Grand Canyon near Phantom Ranch on one of my backpacking trips into the Canyon. |
