Fringe-toed Lizards are found only in areas of windblown sand such as dunes and dry washes. They are very quick and wary, and when fleeing from predators they may run bipedally on their hind legs. They can dive headfirst into the sand and burrow out of sight in just a few moments. They are called Fringe-toed Lizards because the toes on their hind legs have elongated fringe-like scales that give them extra traction on loose sand. This lizard was photographed on the Imperial Sand Dunes in southern California. |
