This large lizard is usually found in arid regions with sparse plant growth that offer plenty of running room. When fleeing predators this lizard tucks its front legs against its body and runs bipedally on its hing legs. It preys on insects, spiders, scorpions, other lizards and even small rodents. The lizard in the picture to the left was a very large one that I discovered on the jeep trail to Chloride City in Death Valley National Park. The one in the picture below was photographed near Cima in the East Mohave National Preserve. |
